I'm planning on teaching a semester HS course, but my administration would like to see a list of objectives. Does anybody know where I could find a completed list, I have done some searches and have come up blank.

Thanks

JV

I don't know if this is what you are looking for or not, but my objective in teaching a one-semester first course in computer programming at a community college includes the following topics, some in more depth than others: (Please forgive the ugly font, but I cut and pasted this from another document and this is how it turned out.)

History, Hardware, Programming Languages
Developing A Program, Program Development Life Cycle, Program Design, Coding Documenting and Testing a Program
Variables, local variables,
Data Types
Selection Structures, Introduction to selections, Relational and Logical operators, Selecting from several alternatives, Applications of selection structures
Loops : Pre-test, Post-test, While, Counter Loop, For loop, Sentinel Loops, Data Validation Loops, Nested Loops, Combining If’s and Loops,
Functions (no Parameters), Value-returning Functions, Parameter Passing, Value Parameters, Accumulators and Counters with Functions
Arrays, Parallel Arrays, Using only part of an array, Searching an array
String and Chars
Objects,Classes,GUI
Event handling
Lists
Concurrent programming

Thanks for the quick reply. That is a start, the objectives we use have to use Bloom's taxonomy, so I just need to convert that list into a more concise list of objectives.

I enjoy your tutorials.

At the other extreme, here are the objectives as defined by the State of
Texas for this course:

Course Objectives/ Learning Outcomes: After the successful completion of this course, a student should be able to:

Demonstrate problem solving skills by developing algorithms to solve problems incorporating the concept of data abstraction in a computer program.
Implement a simple program by writing the code, performing unit testing and debugging the program.
Incorporating the use of sequential, selection and repetition control structures into a program.
Demonstrate an understanding of the design and implementation of methods and functions and the passing of parameters to simplify the solution of large problems and to promote the concept of code reuse.
Understand the basic principles and concepts of object-based terminology.

I am in the early stages of re-writing my tech curriculum K-12. i am trying to get programming in to my middle school as an elective and eventually as a topic in the regular tech class. Do you mind, Dick, if I borrow your objectives? It is truly amazing how little there is on the internet on programming course objectives for middle and high school written by people who actually teach average students.
