Alice doesn't want to start on Mac

I am trying to run a new download of Alice
(this is my first exposure to Alice),
but it will not get past the splash-screen at load time
(I waited 10 minutes)...

1.6GHz G5 (iMac)
OSX 10.4.5
2GB RAM

should I try rebuilding Alice from src?
