hi, i've been working on this for a while. I can't seem to find a good way to put a reticle in, if anyone has any ideas, take a look at it and write back. Right now all i have is the torus on the screen, but it's not very accurate and i can't seem to find a way that does give it some accuracy.

It was a bit unclear as to what you needed help with, but here is a crosshair/reticle I made for your world.

It looks more accurate, to me at least ;)

Hope it helps!

it's better than it was before, but do you know if there is anyway to layer objects in alice, sort of like making it so you always see one object in front of others?

As far as I know, no. :(
Through all my work with Alice, I never saw the option (unless you make it manual, e.g. if the reticle is within certain distance of object, make object invisible).

I might be wrong, however; I'm not as advanced as other users on this forum.:o

Take a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUkxE8_ebeg by a friend of mine and then experiment a bit.

Make the reticle using a billboard and make it's vehicle the camera (not the other way around). Then use some combination paring the mouse to move the camera and the keyboard to orient the reticle - that's where you will have to experiment to see what works best. (Actually the video was made in two steps - but that won't work for a game.)

Also for the reticle, use .png format with alpha level transparency. There is another video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3BZmotTBHc&feature=channel , by the same author, that shows how you can use a freeware program to do this, even as a batch process.

Finally, note that since an Alice world is a true 3D space, you really can't use a "layering" approach.

Added note - you might also experiment with keeping the reticle fixed with respect to the camera and using the keyboard and mouse to control both the camera and some object in the world.

Are you having the bullets fire from the actual gun location wise? if so, try moving the bullets to the middle of the screen since that's where the it will look most natural aiming for.
