Threshold shape

I know when you define a threshold it is a sphere expanding from the center point of the object. What I would like to know is that is there a way to make the threshold into a different shape, and if that is possible can it be a custom shape?

You don't even know how long, or how many different methods I've tried to fix this. I think I have one method, but it would be much easier if I could add objects in run-time.
