I downloaded both but can only do some simple things. Can anyone suggest some ways that I can better use these tools. (My ultimate goal being able too make alice items.)

Unfortunately, I don't know of any Alice specific tutorials for either program. I'd start with Anim8or, since it's much simpler to use (if less powerful) than Blender.

There are some nice basic tutorials for Anim8or at their web site and also references to other sites. There is also a nice library of low-poly models that you could use to start with. (I would never recommend trying to use over a couple thousand polygon objects in Alice 2.x - things get really slow.)

Save your model in .3ds format. (For Anim8or and Alice, I recommend that over .obj - though if you're having problems with the model itself, .obj format, since it is text (.3ds is binary), can be easier to debug.

To get into Alice, use Biturn - a search of the forum should give you the needed references.

And above all, have patience. Making a good 3D model isn't easy - even for pro's.
