I DL and installed ALICE and the Java stuff
I made a small applet
However, when I attempt to play it, the error message that java needs to be installed comes up
Where have I erred?
Thank you

You said you downloaded and installed ALICE and "the Java stuff". What "java stuff"? All you needed to do was download the ALICE files. Go to www.alice.org (http://www.alice.org) and read the page on the Get Alice link and also read the page on the TroubleShooting link.
Good luck
PS - I'm assuming you are using a PC ??

Running a PC...pentium 40G of HD, 1G ram
did the trouble shooting page...that worked...so the graphics is adequate. I saved the file (world I made) and then tried to open it in IE browser. It loads...but then nothing happens and the message suggests I need the java and the java 3D plug-ins.
Now what? Is it back to Flash?

I wouldn't suggest going back to Flash. Go to the web page I posted earlier and learn about how you have to download Java 3D and do some other things. Here's the site again:

Well if you downloaded/installed the necessary software and it's not working for you then I'm afraid I can be of no further help. It works for me and for a lot of web sites that I've visited recently who publish programs written in Alice on the web.
Good luck

One simple and obvious thing - but also one I tend to miss when I'm not paying attention and haven't run something for a while - make sure your browser isn't blocking the ability to run the the page. The way my IE is set up, I specifically have to override a warning to run Flash and some other things - and there isn't anything but a very small line at the top of the screen that indicates this.
