My school is starting a class next semester using Alice, I'd like to know how it compares to other 3d programs for professionals. Is this something that is just a stepping stone to better software for beginners or really worth using long term?

well kind of both, it can be used by more advanced users and is capable of handling some pretty large and advanced programs, but it can also be used by novice programmers and they can take the step by step route.
