Two bits of bad news:

1. I just got a program recommended by Dr. Jim (the expert in these here parts) called 4D Blue which can export models in a format Alice recognizes, but it doesn't take the model format you have, .pk3 (Quake file format) and .glm (Ghoul mesh, an apparently unknown file format, as Google only yielded the obvious, that it's a 3d file format, and nothing else)

2. Just looking at the textures and icons included in the pk3 files, it looks like the models you found, though very nice, are actually TOO nice, or too complex, for Alice to handle anyway.

My advice: find a simpler model in a more popular format, like .3ds or .obj, or ask Dr. Jim personally and see if he'll help you out.

a question? can u convert sketchup files to alice? i heard that u change it to a *.ase file. but it doesnt work. the file's a lightsaber of darth vader's, and a desktop computer.

It took a MASSIVE amount of work, but here's the finished product.

I don't recommend using the lightsaber very much, as it has a polygon count of nearly 20,000, way too large for Alice to handle easily. It should be okay in simple worlds or for display, but don't get carried away.

I exported the file from Sketchup Express as a .dae file, then downloaded a plugin which allowed Blender to import (and export) .dae files. Once imported, you can export it as a .3ds file, which can then be converted to a .ase (Alice-friendly) file. After that, however, you have to open the .ase file in notepad and delete all periods in the names of any materials or nodes in the object (and that's the hard part).

It took me about two and a half hours total of searching, downloading, converting, deleting, and testing to get it finally done.

Sketchup Express is Skp free. That's weird, though, since Sketchup Free should be able to export just fine, just in terrible, obscure formats.

Good news and bad news about the Star Wars models posted earlier.

Good news: I got them converted, and I've posted the world below with their fully textured models.

Bad news: Their subpart structure doesn't support animation very well, all three characters have their thighs connected as one object. Also, I'll only be able to convert models like these for 30 days (29 now) since I'm using trial software.

Hopefully these can still be used in some way. The droid is fairly flexible, especially in the arm, and the lightsaber model is perfect, since it has no subparts.

If you all have some .glm models to convert 29 days from now, the program I used is MilkShape 1.8.4. Just google "Milkshape" and click the first link you get that isn't an ad.

You know that in notepad you could gone to "edit->replace" and then replaced all of the "." with nothing. Takes a few seconds:(

The problem with that being: it would erase all the vital decimal points in the numeric specifications of the models.

Seriously you think I didn't think of that? I'm slightly insulted...

Oh, I thought that you were supposed to delete ALL of the decimal points. I was unbelievably surprised when I thought that you hadn't thought of it. Lol. I wonder if there is a way to highlight what parts of the txt file you want it to search.

Never thought of that, but that's because I'm pretty sure it can't be done, at least not in notepad.

I was thinking I could write a simple Java program which takes care of it automatically, but I'd have to work up the gumption to do so, since I hate working with Java.

Might work in Microsoft word... Ill test it.

Yep it does work in Microsoft Word. Just Ctrl-select what sections you want it to search, press replace, and then hit replace all. I am using Word 2007, so you might have to test if it works with older versions if you have it.

As cool as that is, it still isn't all that useful. See, since you already have to scroll through the entire text to find the names of the objects (I use ctrl-f "name" and then look for periods in the following parentheses), going through and highlighting just the name portions of the model (they're intermittent) would be just about as fast (maybe a little slower) than using ctrl-f to jump to each name and delete the periods manually.
