Hey guys in case you were wondering what I've been working on (you probably weren't) here's a picture:

Say goodbye to the crappy, geometric pause screen and hello to a new blue future! Woohoo!

Course that's just a preview. I still gots to make a weapons shop screen, a powers shop screen, a class change screen, an options screen, and actual options to choose from. I'm thinking a screenshot tool would be nice, something that lets you control the camera while the action is frozen so you can use the capture button for close ups of that grenade you threw into the crowd of zombies and whatnot. Definitely a save and a load button too.

I'm also cutting a few things from the game (won't tell you since it'll just make you look for it and miss it and stuff) in an effort to speed it up. Mostly unnoticable or barely noticeable things or stuff that's outdated and can be replaced with sleeker alternatives.

In any case, yes, post 2500 is going to be RP4 in all its glory.

Oh, also, watch out for zombies with guns.

Aww man. I worked for flippin ever on that pause screen. The idea is that the old one is made with models and those have higher polygon counts than billboards. Also, I thought the old pause screen had some organization issues. With billboards, everything is so much easier to organize, I don't have to worry about stray decimals, and the pause screen will load and unload faster.

Tell you what, after I implement it into RP4, next thing will be alternate themes for the pause screen.

However, since the zombies are packing heat now, you will be needing some sort of protection from Glock rounds...

Still chugging along. Just finished the shop setup and working on integrating the new power indicators (thanks to flats and arty for their discussion on ieee remainder mathy stuff, very helpful for determining single characters of multi-digit numbers). Seconds ago finished the new bullet time meter (see below). It disappears as your bullet time power runs out.

Question for DNK: How dark would you want the secondary theme to be? Like bloody handprints dark or grungy and scratchy dark?

Update: Finished the first concept for the dark theme.

Good stuff man. I'm actually notoriously bad at my own game, but then that's partially because I prefer buying only bullet time and nothing else.

Dude, don't even get me started. How many of your super-old, half-finished games have you bumped due to lack of interest on the part of...um....everyone? Also, none of your games has even come close to RP in terms of completeness, theres always no way to win, no way to lose, or nothing to do. And as for your "Halo" project? Not only is it unoriginal, being not your idea and all, but it's also done almost exclusively by other people, like zone and the guys who posted the models you used (including me). Not to mention the total lack of wall collision.

No more criticism from you. If you're uninterested, keep it to yourself, like I had until now with all of your recent projects.

Yes the class menu isn't complete. Also, I don't think I'll be implementing more than one ability per class for the first build of RP4. There's a possibility of different weapons for each class, though I'm trying to keep this build as compact as possible both to boost speed and to rush development so that you can actually play something sometime soon.

I personally enjoy making note of progress as I go along, as it kind of validates my effor,. but if it bores you to tears to read about such things, or if you prefer to be suprised entirely, I can always keep it quiet until its finished.

For the moment here's the game plan:

-Interchangeable theme support (textures are super easy to swap, as opposed to physical models)

That stuff you posted looks fairly cool.

I know this game is old, but for anyone who wants to know...

Feedback...

Pros:

Play forever mode
Super addicting
Power ups and unlocks

Cons:

The boss is sometimes to powerful
Sometimes bullets go through zombies even though there marked(rare)
The achievement version freezes and crashes everytime after a minute of gameplay


Overall

93/100 by Chrome Games - VIDEO REVIEWED (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRSsEc5LCU4)

This is probably the number 1 game in the community. It is super fun and should be played! It is very addicting and sometimes can get frustrating due to super over powered bosses. The achievemnt version crashes after fireing a certain amount or just trying to do anything. I never got an achievement because it crashed all the time...thus, the 93. That doesn't take away the fact that verion 3.5 is AMAZING.

Anyways X just 1 thing i noticed. After the "Zombies Win" sequence if you press 'w' or 's' and switch weapon to the MP5 you should be able to see the red line and still be able to fire. You can also still use repel and PK Penguin.

Resident Penguin is probably one of the best games on the Alice community. It combines the brilliant and addicting concept of zombie survival games, with the coolest animal in the history of animals: Resident Penguin. You'll find RP leaving his beloved homeland with (what else?) a bereta and infinite ammo too, and heading to a haunted football field as you try and protect yourself from the dead football players as they try to relive the sport, replacing you with a football and kicking you through the goal. So is this game as awesome as I've made it sound? Find out in this review...

Presentation
------------
The concept of RP is pretty easy to understand. You use A/D to turn and click to shoot. The only problem I had was that I had to look throughout the events section of the source code to figure out that Space or Enter was the pause keys. This is really suprising, since all you had to do was type 'Space pauses the game and allows you to buy upgrades etc.' However, the GUIs in which the upgrades and weapons are presented is wonderful. While they could've looked a bit better, they transition and resize beautifully when your transition from different parts of the GUI. Another cool thing is that you don't have to click EXACTLY on the 3D text like you do with most Alice games. Just click on the button like you'd expect. This definately raises the bar as one of the best GUIs on the Alice community.

Audio/Video

The graphics in this game are ok. All of the models look good, especially Resident Penguin, who looks adorable even when he's pointing a MP5 directly at your face. The animations are all very good though I'm most impressed by the bullet shells and RP getting kicked through the goal by zombies. My big gripe about this game has probably got to be the environmental design, and this is that there is none. The game looks alright but when the fogs gone due to your night vision ability you realize your just in an empty field of grass. There's no football stands no tombstones... nothing! As for the sound and music, sadly, there are none. Keeping in mind, however, that alice errors out when sound is played for some people, this is understandable, even if it's dissapointing.

The gameplay is a standard zombie shootout. However you can't move forward or backward, you just turn. This puts an interesting twist with the gameplay since you must click the enemies to death, once you've done that more enemies come. This gameplay can get repetative at times, but for the majority it's insanely addicting.

Replay Value
------------
Ok, so aside from the game being addicting, the game also has upgrades and weapons you can buy. These increase your abilities and how you can play the game. Some of these you'll have to buy in order to survive long enough to get others, and that's sort of dissapointing, but other than that you can buy in the order you choose. This adds plenty of extra playability on this game, and since your powers are reset when you die, you'll be striving to get them back again. Plus there's an infinate mode if you want to go beyond the games standalone levels.

Cool. Nice review. Except with a 6.0 on Audio/Visuals, the final score wouldn't be a 9.0. Thats a wrong average. it should be around 8.6 or something. Just redo the math..lol

But I appreciate your long reviews. My style is different though. I like your style a lot. Everyone has there own styles. I got my Something/100 scoreing. Yours it averaging(redo the math on this one though), and Arty has the Stars. Perfect!

this number rounds up to a 9.0, but now that you think about it:

8.75 is a good score and is rounded up more closely. I'm just not used to doing that :D

With Alice 2.2 constantly updating and getting better, making games with it is getting easier, so hopefully this time the complexity of the game won't extend to the point that it lags enormously.

I'm making my first commercial game right now, and all the time I can spare is spent developing that. I can honestly say that working with Alice has been a huge help in preparing me to be an independent developer.

I'd love to finish RP4, but as it stands I'd have to spend a lot of time I really can't spare on it.

As soon as I get the chance, though, I'll finish it up.

I'm calling it Gatling Good and I'm making it for the Android.

It's a lot like RP, except you control an action hero-esque character with an action hero-esque gatling gun (i. e. has infinite ammo, never jams, never overheats, etc.) and several assorted baddies coming at you from all sides.

It's playable, though at the moment, you can't even die yet. Still have lots of work to do. Sprite editing, coding, sound editing, and the best part, testing. I'm doing nearly all of this myself, too (it was supposed to be a team project for my game design class, but one of my team members is a lazy jerk and another is nice and supportive, but doesn't know the programs used to make the game).

Probably a buck. That's the minimum price for apps, I thought. It's my first game, so I'd like to get my foot in the door with something simple, cheap, and frivolously entertaining.

How are you going to publish your games? The point of getting corona for me was to combine the publishing and simulation into one piece of software. I don't know the rules for Android, but I know you have to pay Apple for the privilege to publish apps to the App Store.

The plugin for Eclipse was developed by Google, so it has to be simple. I'm sure it is much easier to use Corona, but I don't have a spare $199 per year lying around, but $25 is fine for me. That's why all the software I'm using is free.

I do know that since it is Java there are lots of free engines etc available all over the internet. Anyway, I know its probably much easier via Corona, just more expensive.

Hey if you can find a cheaper way to do it, power to you. Corona was just the first thing I found and it seemed to work nicely. The price and duration are terrible, but the developer support and tools provided are top notch.

On the topic of Resident Penguin, I found a glitch that may have been noticed before:

1) Get the Shining Lance.
2) Start using it.
3) While firing it, press Space to pause.
4) Unpause.
5) Fire the Lance again.

If it works right, you'll get a GIANT LASER BEAM from the Shining Lance.

It's a normal cone, just stretched and recolored. I think for placement reasons I needed it resized every time you turned the beam on/off. If I redid it today, it would be implemented a bit better, but that's what seemed like the best idea at the time.

You should really stop assuming we're all out to get you. If we say something you don't understand, don't assume it's an insult. Most of the people on the Alice boards are nice, especially the regulars.

Anyway...

The Shining Lance doesn't work on the one big one. I'd gotten complaints that it made RP 2 too easy, so I gave it a flaw.

I'd recommend grenades or the triple barrel, personally, since grenades take him out in two shots and the triple barrel will let you hit the other enemies in addition to him.

That is right. This is the cleanest nicest forum I have ever been on. X is correct when he says most of us are very nice. I personally do get mad some times in the community and long time members have noticed, but I do try and help as many members as I can. I am not really paying attention to my posts frequently, but once I do hit a certain mark, it just makes me feel good about it. Members have been banned for being dis-respectful and stuff, but as long as you follow the rules, you will not get banned. I'm typing this really long message for whatever reason. But my main point is...."thumbs up" on X's comment.

I like this forum, its not over the top with 100's of people commenting every hour, it's personal. I can keep up with all the threads, get one on one with members if they need help (or if I need help:D). plus X is a great moderator.

If you had dust under your bed and vaccumed the dust, would it do any good to stick another hose under there?
If you were building and hammered a nail into a board, what good, dare I ask, would it do to bang another hammer on the nail?
I already get your point, jediaction. No need to go on.
To the main topic, I say there should be a sentry gun, an airstrike, or another penguin to help out. Or, perhaps, a two-player option. It would be quite fun to shoot zombies with a friend or sibling.

Cheats/Level skips? The save feature in 3.5 was supposed to fix that. But that's kind of my fault for not integrating the thing properly. I'll look into it.

266 kills on infinity mode, I have a triple gun and all the upgrades, and no zombies are coming. Just infinite invinci-spiders. Does that mean I won, or is it some sort of twisted easter egg?
Edit: .....Until I turn the speed up to 10x and another big shiny guy spawns.

This game is fabulous, a shining star from an Alice expert. First of all, the concept is genius; penguin - gun - unlimited ammo - zombies. That being said, a good concept isn't enough if it is used in a terrible game, but this game is the complete opposite, it perfects the concept with style - leading to a very addictive experience.
The game works well, with responsive controls, accurate bullet collision and error-free animations. It is balanced nicely too; not too hard, you can level up fairly easily, but not too easily, with deliberately limited turning speeds, vast numbers of zombies approaching from random angles and even alternative enemies.
Playing for a while does not get boring as there are options to change the way you play, new guns, upgrades, classes. The scoring system works well too. And if you get bored after that there is even a version in which you can earn trophies for achieving certain goals.

As for negatives, there aren't many. The upgrades and classes systems could be merged, or simplified as they are too similar and potentially confusing. The bullet collision, although very accurate, could still be improved; occasionally zombies randomly sponge bullets, especially when they are very close. Zombies sometimes even still get you when you kill them at very close range. Its not getting a higher rating until said improvements and more are implemented.

My advice would be to get RP4 out, I cant wait any longer. The ideas you have for it seem to make sense, with the improved menus and your recent consideration for changing the upgrades/classes system. Add to this perfect bullet collision and a working trophies system and you've got yourself a winner.

Since I don't use Alice pretty much at all anymore (I've been using Cinema 4D for animations), I frequent the forums less. I still browse the forums while not logged in though.
It seems Alice's popularity has increased greatly since the last time I was active. There's usually over 100 people on the forums at any given time.
