This one took a lot of work. I wanted to make a world with one of the models I imported into Alice, so I decided to use one of the imported guns to make "Resident Penguin" (oooooh)!
There's no instructions, so read this before you play:
You're a penguin with a gun, infinite ammo, something to prove, and nothing to lose, so you decide to rid the world of zombies.
Hold 'a' to turn left and 'd' to turn right. Click the mouse button to fire at a zombie (you can hold the mouse button too, but it's slower). The penguin automatically aims at zombies which he's directly looking at (they turn red to show they're targeted).

Descriptions
ResidentPenguin1: The first version. Small and simple, yet addicting and fun. Use this if you have a slow machine.
ResidentPenguin2: An experiment to add to RP1. Has more weapons and different camera angles, but unchanged gameplay and SERIOUS lag. Look at this to see what NOT to do when making a game.
ResidentPenguin3.1: The polished result of a weeks worth of work. I'm very proud of it. Has just about everything you can think of
ResidentPenguin3.5: 3.1, but with more levels, an option to play forever, better special effects, and a new enemy.

lol, dude, that was the most fun i've had all week. loved it. especially the "zombies win" sequence. really, this is amazing. you rock
one thing though: I turned really slowly. I suppose that's necessary, though, to keep it from being too easy.
you should do something like an upgrade screen between levels! you could measure some kind of stat, (not sure how you determine when to go to next level) like #of zombies killed, or accuracy, and use that to give points or money for buying new weapons!

Wow! Nice game. Its simple and fun, I like it when the zombie kicks you into the field goal!
Nice job with the light effects on the gun when you shoot. I like how you did all the coding. I do not know how to do all those complex codes. I also like how you had the zombies respawn and I love the red targeting!
I can see this took a lot of time, and you did a really good job.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm re-working it right now to try and make it even better! So far I've added four new weapons, three different camera angles, a better targeting system, and I'm working right now on a way to make the enemies smarter.

Alright, here's an advanced version of Resident Penguin. New features:
-penguin turns faster
-6 different weapons to choose from (Press s to switch)
-4 different camera angles to choose from (Press 1 to switch)
-more sensitive aiming (originally you could point almost anywhere and hit the zombie, now you have to aim properly)
-a few fixed bugs (you can't fire after being kicked anymore)
There are probably a few bugs I missed, so if you find them, tell me. When the world start' you're given three seconds before the zombies start moving, enough time to get ready and switch between weapons and camera angles for awhile.

I really liked the first game, but as I loaded the second game, there were a few major things.
First of all, the other guns are really cool, but the fifth gun is just WAY too over powerful. You can just hold it down and spray, killing everything as you turn to face it. Also, I noticed a bug when I did this. If you spray the gun and just kill everything, then eventually no more zombies will respawn. I would suggest either taking out the laser gun, or at least making it shoot for 1 second, and then it has to cool down for 1.5 or 2 seconds before it can shoot again, and this could be easily fixed by just adding the wait command into shooting the laser gun.
The other bug I noticed is that as the zombies respawn all at once, it lags like crazy, and there is a big delay for a second or two, but I don't see how you could fix this one, but maybe making each zombie respawn a little later than the other, so that they do not all respawn at once and lag the program.
Other than that, nice improvements in the camera angles and guns! Another suggestion that I might want to see in a later version is to add a laser sight onto the silenced MP5, the second gun after pistol. That would be really cool.
EDIT: Oh, and another thing I noticed is that when you lose, and the zombies win, kicking you over the field goal, it is very laggy. Also, the as the zombies win, if you wait a while you notice that the zombies are moving across the map near the field goal! Maybe you can make it so that if zombies win, all zombies opacity = 0%, so that you cannot see them as they walk near the field goal.
Also, I would take away the move camera left and right when you move arrow keys thing, because it is really not necessary, as zombies only come from 1 side.

Yeah. The game also freezes if you switch or shoot to much after the level's over.

that game was awesome, i agree with Dameri the 5th one was kind of easy and may i recomend that the arrows don't move the camera, also u kind of turn slow but i like it how the zombies turn red if there in sight that is bad arse lol

In no particular order:
I made the laser to be kind of like the weapon you save up for at the end of the game, you know, the one you only get to use on the last part. Also, I know that the zombies sometimes don't come back, but I'm really not sure why that is. There have been a few times when I've been testing the game and something bad happens, only to have it never happen again after repeating the event several times. I do have an idea to counteract that glitch, though, so I'll see if I can work around it.
The delay for the zombies is intentional. I was trying to make it so that the zombies COULDN'T respawn all at once, so I had each zombie wait a different amount of time after being shot before respawning.
I knew about the waiting and seeing the zombies glitch, but I left it in cause I though it was funny. It looks almost like the zombies are going after the penguin to kick it some more, or like the zombies are making a victory march across the field.
As far as lag goes, that has never been a problem for either of my two computers. Both of them have tried the world and ran nearly every scenario I could think of with fine results (except for a slight speed increase in one of them when a zombie is shot). I could try looking back at my code to see if it could be streamlined, but nearly every processor-power saving trick I've tried for this world has caused world-stopping exceptions.
In any case, I'm listening to you guys, so thanks for playing and for the input!

The zombies should come at you quicker and all the crazy guns should come later in the game. Nice weapons though. All of them are way bettter than the gun in my gun.

I have a couple ideas to make it more replyable:
1. Have the game keep track of how many kills you get. Free reign of bragging rights in this forum.
2. Maybe put the weapons in order from least powerful to most powerful. When you get to a certain level, the weapons start unlocking. SO if you make it to level 5, you get the super strong weapon but all the zombies move faster. It is a good way to balance the game.
For me, the second version was way too laggy to play. It froze so much. It worked fine in the first version though. Overall, this is one of the most fun games on here (Zombies win screen made me chuckle). It is simple, addicting, and fun... the basic building blocks of a good game. All you need to work on is replayability and you are set. Good job!

Your version 2 wasn't choppy at all for me. I do think having the weapons in order would be great. I also think having limited ammo would be pretty cool too. It would make the game 10 times harder and you would have to think a bit more.

It all depends on what your machine can handle. In general, to create a game which is both quickly responsive and able to handle several events at once (such as two zombies dying at nearly the same time), it must have a BOATLOAD of if else ifs which loop constantly. Because of this, the ability to handle the game quickly depends on the computer's ability to process these if/else ifs constantly and simultaneously.
Either way, my next step, since all but one of you had problems with it, is to try to change these if/else ifs to something more manageable.
UPDATE: After only about an hour's worth of work, I've already managed to reduce the filesize by nearly 2mb! Go me!

Also, (though it isn't typically my policy to double-post, I felt this was important and distinct enough to merit a totally different post) have you all realized each weapon's unique characteristics and abilities?
-The Handgun has none yet, it's just medium speed, single-target
-The MP5 can shoot quickly and automatically
-The Swashbuckler can take out several targets at once, but the amount is determined randomly
-The Shining Spreader has a charge shot which, when fully charged, can wipe the whole screen clear if aimed properly
-The Shining Lance (as you all know) has a beam which hits continuously
-The Triple Gun has the widest constant, uncharged range of all the guns and can take out several targets at once
And on that note, are there any weapons I've missed you'd like me to add? Handguns would be easiest, but if necessary I can shrink a rifle-like gun to fit into the peguin's fins. Remember it would have to be different in some way from ALL of the guns already in the world for it to be worth adding.

you should also let the penguin move left and right and let him turn a little faster but dude that was awesome!
p.s the first time i played it did nothing but the first level

Actually, version 3 is complete, and that annoying level-freeze bug is just one of the many things I've fixed in RP3. How does this sound?
-Six levels instead of three DONE
-KO counter (and I look forward to seeing how high your scores are) DONE
-Point counter DONE
-Accuracy counter DONE
-Weapons unlocked with points DONE
-Pause game and switch weapons DONE
-Switch weapons both forwards and backwards DONE
-Ability to purchase upgrades for your penguin, like faster turning and superpowers (those'll be SO FUN to program!)DONE

wow, i figured there'd be some nice weapons, but jeez! i think v2 is cooler, but significantly easier, which kind of takes away from it. And it does run alot slower. my computer is pretty hos (god, i AM a redneck) and it still went about half the speed of the first version. i think if you found a way to have your zombies attack from a wider angle, that would mitigate it a tad.
by the way, saw your youtube. that was pretty funny. i had to watch the first half twice. :) was that you in the voice over? lol

And it's done! This is the most I've ever worked on a project, so I really do hope you guys enjoy it. It's HUGE though, so you may want to close your internet connection while you play, to free up processor power.
Another trick I've found helpful is playing the world, then doing few things (like shooting, pressing pause, letting the zombies kick you, etc.) and then restarting the world. I've noticed it tends to run faster when it's done it once before (cache memory?).
Anyway, here are the controls:
-Hold 'A' to turn left and 'D' to turn right
-Press 'S' to switch weapons forward, and 'X' to switch backward
-Press Space or Enter to pause the game and bring up the pause menu. From inside the pause menu, you can switch weapons, switch camera angles, buy guns, and buy abilities for your penguin (I've been using a computer with Windows Vista and Word 2003...I think, so I don't know if the fonts I used for the pause menu and HUD will shop up for you guys. If they don't, the text may disappear or run off the screen, so heads up.)
-Press 'Q' to repel the zombies, if you've bought the power.
-Hold 'W' to slow down the zombies, but not the penguin, if you've bought the power
-Press 'E' to use a shockwave which kills all zombies (except the big one, it just hurts him) if you've bought it.
-If you see the big one, pump him full of everything you've got, because he's REALLY tough (also, the penguin will automatically aim for him if he can)
-The Shining Lance now has two disadvantages: It's expensive, and one other hidden thing...
-You'll probably need Night Vision by Level 5. It's nearly impossible to see anything if you don't have it (I challenge someone to try and beat it without Night Vision)
-This version's HARD, but beatable. Try different combinations of powers and weapons and see what works for you
-My top score is 207 KOs
If you find any bugs (besdides lagging, because I expect that), tell me.

Ok, now I finished the game, with a total of exactly 200 kills. This is no doubt the best game I have ever played on Alice. It took me about 10 games to actually beet it, and it was really fun and really addicting. I love the lightning effects and also, a BIG plus for me is that it actually runs faster and with less lag than the version 2.0, while having a lot better effects!! I always got really scared when I faced the big zombies, but I found a cheep way to kill them easily.
Here are the good things about the game (and there are a lot of them):
I tried the MP5 and I really like the laser sight that I asked for! It really helps in finding out where exactly you are aiming, definitely worth the 50k points to get. Also I tried the Swashbuckle, and it is the cheapest gun, but it is also one of the most powerful. The others are good, and worth the money, but you can easily finish the game with just the Swashbuckle and all the power.
That brings me to the upgrades. At first, I only used the PK power because it was cheap and had great affects on multiple zombies coming too close. Then I used the other ones, and they came in handy, and I like almost every aspect of them (except for a few small things that I will get to later.) Altogether though, the upgrades are awesome.
I tried the night vision, and it gets rid of all the fog, and if you get this upgrade in the beginning, it will get rid of all your lag too! The bad thing is with less lag you are more likely to die because things go faster and it is hard to keep up (night vision better for later levels). The PK power is easily my favorite because of its affects, and almost tied with it is the Bullet-Time, which slows things down a lot, letting you think more without the choppy lag (I also love the effect of how the bullets from the pistol fall during bullet time, so cool and realistic!). Also the repel is good because you get 3 per level, but it is kind of hard to reach because you click Q with picky finger which is not as strong and hard to get to during quick-thinking situations (I'm not putting that in the bugs post though, because it is not too bad). And thats about it... Great Game!

Now that all the good things about the game are out of the way, here are some of the bad things / things you should change:
The first thing I noticed as I played the game and got my first upgrade, is that the PK Power is ridiculously low-costing for what it can do. I think this should be worth 75-100k points instead of the 50k it is at now. I can buy it after only 2 levels!
Another thing, and this is a really big one, is the Swashbuckle. It is the cheapest gun in the game (25k), yet it is disputably the most powerful. Capable of hitting multiple targets if the zombies are clustered together, you can easily just sweep through quick-tapping the mouse and kill everything quickly. Also, this is the gun that I use to kill the big zombie. It takes only a second or two of quick clicking to turn the large zombie into dust (literally :D). I would either raise the cost of this weapon to 75,000, or make it a little less powerful, or give it less splash damage (smaller target area).
Also, I noticed that you made the pistol more accurate, making it harder to hit a target with it. Since the penguin moves faster now, it is hard to just turn as you quick-shoot with the pistol, because it only targets in on the zombies for a split second (unlike the Swashbuckle). It makes it hard to kill a single zombie, because I am constantly going too too far right, then too far left with the pistol to get it targeted quickly. This is not a major thing though, maybe if you could just give it a little bit more target area.
If I think of something else, I will edit this, but until then, its been a great game and I have thoroughly enjoyed playing it!

Thank you very much for your positive input! I made the upgrades cheap because I was trying to let players buy weapons and upgrades, not one or the other. I also made the Swashbuckler powerful because it's the slowest, but I can reduce it's range (and increase the pistol's) easily.
The big question I asked myself was which gun should be the cheapest, since I already knew which two should be the most expensive. I admit, I did most of my difficulty testing while using the Beretta and the MP5, both of which can only hit one target at a time, so the splash weapons may be too overpowered. So which one should be the cheapest?

I think that as long as you lower the range of the Swashbuckle by a bit and make it a little less powerful (just a little), then you can keep it the same price, maybe 30-50k if you keep the power the same. It is definitely the anti-big-zombie gun for now though.
Wait until other people put in their input, and then you can put in other stuff to change for version 4.0 (although 3.0 is so good, there is really no reason to make a 4.0 other than to add new stuff to the game, which would be awesome :D).

Nah, I consider you guys my testers, the people who find the bugs I can't. I've already edited RP3 to address everything you mentioned (I think) plus some other stuff. Here are a few of the changes:
-Big one is slightly faster (if the Swashbuckler was fast enough to get him every time, there's a problem)
-MP5 doesn't recoil as much (the laser sight looks really silly when there's too much recoil)
-Swashbuckler has been SEVERELY nerfed (slower firing, slightly less power, shorter range, and a 30% chance of misfiring, although it's still great at taking out several close enemies and has the highest power)
-Beretta's range has been increased to be more lenient in aiming
-MP5's power has been increased
-Prices of almost everything has gone up
-Bug fixed: camera can't be switched when zombies win
-Bug fixed: Last 3 lines of descriptions no longer disappear if you switch camera angles
I'll wait awhile for people to put in other suggestions before I release the edited version.

WOW!!! Is all I have to say. This is the first time I have played a game in Alice that was literally addicting. I love games like this where you can upgrade your weapons and abilities. The interface is great, there is no lag... Absolutely phenomenal!!!

Haha, I just got a weird bug. I was killing zombies, and there was only 1 left for me to kill to win the game, but I couldn't turn in time, so I did my PK power, and it killed the zombie, but at the same time that zombie kicked me to the field goal! So now it says You Win! overlapped with Zombies Won. I don't know if there is a need to fix this bug, because it is so rare for this to happen, but just wanted to let you know.
Oh yea, and I also have another suggestion for version 4.0. I don't know if you want to do this because it might make the file larger, causing more lag, but how about if you make it so that when you go to the gun store and click on a gun, it shows you what that gun looks like. This would be awesome if you did this, because then we could see what that gun looks like before we buy it, and maybe even its stats too (although you don't really need to show stats, it says it on the left).
I don't know how you would go about doing this, but I have some ideas:
EDIT: I'm sorry, I had this huge list of how I think you should do what I said above, but I see now you already have pictures of the weapons in the folder DupeWeapons. Just use those pictures and put make it so that when you click the weapon in the Gun shop, it shows that picture underneath the lists of the guns.
I hope you will implement this in your next version. Oh, and if you make a reply to this, can you just post the version 3.0 again in your reply, because this is reaching the bottom of the forum page, and people coming to download this can just download it from the bottom instead of scrolling to the top to look for it. (Or if you want, you can post version 3.1 with the bug fixes!)
I think one change for your controls would be to make the switching weapons keys q and e.
To Dubastot:
I think the weapons are fine as they are now, and the Q and E buttons are really needed for the powers, not the guns. If Q and E were to switch guns, then it would be hard to press the buttons for the powers, which are very useful to win the game. Also, you can change weapons by pressing the space bar to pause, or by just clicking the arrow keys on bottom.
Oh, and x2495iiii I thought of another thing to add. Maybe you could add sounds to the gunshots, like a pistol sound when you fire the pistol, MP5 sound for the MP5 (but make sure its a silenced sound), and so on. Oh, and make sure that you save before importing any sounds, or else an error could come up. If the sound does not import properly, just quit the program without saving and open it up again, or an error will occur whenever you open up the program if you save it. Maybe you could put it in with the loop for the machine gun, so whenever it loops, it will make the sound again, one for each bullet that comes out.

I suppose I could do the pictures thing, but it'll take the addition of several booleans and dummy objects, since I have to check to make sure what pictures need to be resized in what way so that when the game is unpaused, the pictures go back to normal (incedentally, the pictures aren't pitures at all, they're actually models with no shading so the lightning doesn't affect their color scheme).
The simultaneous death/victory bug could be fixed with the addition of a few checks during the kicking method.
By the way, I never explained the stats of the guns:
-Power means damage it does to the one big one, since all guns can kill normal zombies in one shot
-Speed means firing speed, especially autofire
-Range means how lenient the gun is with aiming
I just thought of a cool way to reward players for beating the game, but it may take awhile, so that'll be version 4. In the meantime, here's the bug-fixed version.

Ok, I just played 3.1 a few times, and it is a lot better in terms of difficulty now, thanks. I see that you made the Swashbuckle gun slower, which is good, so now it is worth the low 30,000 price, and it is more evened out.
I did just notice one thing though, when the Zombies Win, and you have more than one gun, you can press s and x, and you can still see the gun changes thing when you should not be able to. This is a minor bug I think and shouldn't be too hard to fix. Try buying a weapons and then letting zombies kill you, then switch weapon and see what I mean.
Another thing, have you considered the sounds yet? I think it would make it the game a lot more realistic if there were sounds whenever a certain gun is fired. You can edit the sound so that it is only a short burst and can be repeated every shot quickly. Just want to know what you think. Again, save before downloading any sound files to your program or errors will occur.
EDIT: Oh and another bug I noticed, when I went to the gun shop and bought a gun, then clicked on the background image to go back to main menu, I pressed space bar at the same time as it was going, so some weird bug occurred where the start menu from then on showed in the bottom right corner whenever I went to it, and I had to restart the game.

I had considered sounds, yes, and music as well. I didn't include it in 3.0 or 3.1 because I wanted to keep the filesize down (the inclusion of just four 2 minute songs in an Alice world that I did awhile back worked perfectly, but made it go from 335kb to like 11mb).
Hmm...that's weird, since I had the display parts set to false. I'll probably have to move them entirely offscreen to fix that bug.

Ok, I get why a 2 minute song would take that much room, but a less than 1 second gun shot would barely take up anything, so what would that be, 6 gunshots? Maybe at the most 100kb, so not too bad. Whole songs take up a lot of memory.
Also, do you think you can fix the menu bug I talked about in my edit last post? When you click to go out of gun option and then press spacebar at the same time, it moves the menu way to the right.
EDIT: Ok, so the spacebar thing is not an issue then, but can you please reply about the gunshot sounds? I think the control scheme is fine.

Yeah, you're supposed to just hit the spacebar again if you're in the gun menu and you want to unpause. I made it so that you can press spacebar or enter at any point in the pause menu to exit the pause menu and continue play (try it!), but if you do both, the resizing and motion won't execute properly and will make the display parts move and resize wrong.
Another thing: is everyone okay with the control scheme as it is, or should I put alternatives in?

I just downloaded the third one and it's pretty cool. However for some reason I can't purchase any guns or powers, even when I have the correct amount of points. Has this happened to anyone else? Either way I can tell thats it's an awesome game from the previous ones, and that a huge amount of work went into it. Great Job!

I checked the code for the buying of weapons and upgrades, and there's no glitches at all I can find. Try restarting Alice and playing again, and if that doesn't work, delete and re-dowload the world and then try.

Do you think the game could be a bit longer and different types of enemies would be cool too. Plus some enemy vehicles or super strong units you need to kill with a rocket launcher. Just some ideas.

Longer is a good one. I've been thinking about a way to do that that doesn't involve shooting the same zombies forever (by the way, has anyone managed to top 207 kills?).
I've actually been working on more enemies. They'll probably be like the big one; just one appears at a time and at random, but can do something the normal zombies can't.
That's the second request I've gotten for a rocket launcher. Alright I'll see if I can make one. Also, it just so happens that I have a nice APC model that might work in Alice.
Any power ideas or extra weapons that haven't been thought of?

1. A power up that freezes enemies for a short period of time.
2. A power up that gives you 2x points or 2x kills for every kill for a limited time.
3. Also adding power ups for individual weapons would be cool. For example, an increase in the rate of fire or damage

Freeze time power: You read my mind. I already added that to RP4.
Point multiplier: That's a good one. Not sure how to add it though. That's something you can't buy...
Weapon ups: I could probably add the damage thing, but the rate of fire might be a little tough. I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the ideas!

Maybe, instead of the point multiplier, you could give us more points the higher level we are, and maybe have the level go up to 10 this time. Like level 2 we would get +200 more points per zombie we kill (1200 per zombie), then level 4 1400, level 6 1750, then finally at level 8 it reaches maximum of 2000 points per zombie, so it would be easier to get those higher-level guns and upgrades.
I was also thinking of a grenade type weapon, and a shockwave (area damage) type upgrade, but I don't know if this would be a good idea.

Or an energy draining grenade. When you throw it, there is a giant circle that opens up that causes all zombies that move inside of that area to constantly lose health. The sphere could last about 10-20 seconds.

The only problem with that is that it would only work on the big zombie. Normal zombies are 1 hit kills, so how would a hitpoint of 1 be drained over time? I have another idea though, what about a grenade like you said that has a 10-20% opacity of light blue color when it explodes, and it severly slows down the zombies within the dome for 5 seconds, and it would be tossed maybe 20 meters from the penguin.

Oh yea your right, hmm... What about if the blue dome would make all the zombies in that area be attracted all toward the middle of that dome for 3 seconds, that way it would stop them in their track for a limited time and it would be a lot easier target because they are all clustered.
Ya, this and also the point increase every other level thing I talked about earlier, I would like to see that in the next version.

I like the black hole grenade idea, that's a good one, but I don't like the point multiplier. I made those things expensive for a reason, so that you CAN'T afford them unless you save up specifically for them. Besides, in the next version, there'll be a way to get double points for a short time (I decided it would be based on accuracy. If you get, say, 40 or 50 consecutive hits, you get a 10 second double-points bonus).
I think I'll have to make the Lance a little cheaper though, since I just realized that without killing the big one a few times, you literally cannot afford it until the game is almost over.
I came up with some other stuff, but I want at least PART of the game to be a suprise, so I'll keep it to myself for now.

Man I love this game!!! You have inspired me to start making a game like this!!! It is gonna take me a while but I see how rewarding it is. The only thing I think you should put in is that the penguin should be able to take a few hits, because there is a few times when I almsot get it but get hit and its over, but non the less I LOVE this game. Just my 2 cents! =)

Ya sometimes I kill a zombie as its kicking me, and even though I killed it I still die. Is there any way you can make it so that only if the foot is within the area of the penguin, then the penguin dies? I think you have it now so that if the kicking method is initialized, no matter what the penguin will die, even if the zombie gets killed before it finishes the kick.

Yah i'v noticed that too. =( I can't get past level 4 right now haha. That is particaly because of this big Iron Man that pops out in level 1 and it never dies by then so it blows up on me haha. So yah extra lives, or him having a health bar would be good. =)
EDIT: Now I know what you mean, I was in level 4, I killed the zombie, then I got kicked. >.>

Funny story about that:
I thought the glitch was funny at first, so I left it in. Later, I thought it'd be cool if the penguin could cap a zombie right as it's getting ready to kick him, so I tried to fix it, but realized that, as the code is written now, I'd have to add some really unhappy if/else ifs or nine extra methods to make it work. I just didn't want to gum up the works any more than I already had, so I left it in again. Now, here you are asking for it some more, so ok, I'll add the if/else ifs.
By the way, I've already added an ability which allows you to take a hit and keep playing.
And as far as the big one goes, I don't plan on adding a health bar, since part of its threat is that you have no idea how many more bullets it can take, or if you'll be able to stop it, before it reaches you.

You could put a dummy way up in the air for each zombie, and when they kick, the dummy flies to the zombies foot in zero seconds. Then tell the penguin that when the dummy is within x meters of dummy, he dies. That is how I made meleeing work in Infiltration. It works really well.
Or I just thought that you could have the dummy on his foot already and have it not showing. Then right as his foot gets to where you want it, it appears. Same basic idea, less work.

On that note, I spent a good part of today finding cool models in the Google Sketchup warehouse and converting them to Alice friendly format. I REALLY want to learn how to cut objects into subparts so that animation is possible, so that I can use models like the one in the Alice world below (wouldn't it be SO COOL if you could use him?)
xxledzeppelin2x3: Thanks, I'm glad you like the game. To get new guns, you have to buy them with points. Use the beretta at first, then press space to pause the game and then click the "Guns" tab on the right to bring up the weapons purchase menu. The cheapest gun is 30,000 points, though, so you'll have to save up.
Dameria and chris101b: Yeah, I suppose that would work. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Thanks guys!
Other notes: RP3's theme was the addition of upgrades. RP4's theme will be...classes! I always liked being able to choose what kind of hero I wanted to be, like warrior or ninja or whatever. I'm going to make two powers for each class, one which comes with the class and one which must be bought, as well as a hat or accessory for each class that is added to the penguin when you choose the class. So, if you guys have any ideas for what classes (and corresponding abilities) could be included, shout em out!
-Already in the game: Ninja, Gunner, Blaster (uses the lasers), Marksman (WAY different than the gunner, trust me), Bomber, Slayer.
And finally, I was experimenting with a program to get an object to turn to follow the mouse cursor, but ultimately gave up with it because it was annoying me WAY too much. IF you guys have any ideas on how to do this without having it mess up when you move the mouse too quickly, tell me.

That neatModel right there has awesome visuals! But, it is highly lacking in parts. There should definitely be more parts to it, like the Halo Master Chief model that I configured to be able to move in another thread (somewhere in the Works-In-Progress section). Also, it is way to big, 1.3 MB? Are you really willing to put that much in even if you can get it to move?
Haha, I saw what you did in your program trying to do the mouse thing and everything, and I made a VERY EXTREMELY EASY way to do it with only 1 code that does basically what you are trying to do (although not completely) but only with 1 relatively simple code!!! lol
Try it out and see if this is what you were trying to do.
(The random subtract and division I got from trial and error to try and get the best results.)
You can twink it by adding barriers and making him slower and stuff, but I just did this quick, I'll let you build onto it (if you want).

Actually, that was what I had at first, essentially (except I also had a method that made the gun turn to face the mouse cursor when the world started). I used that cruddy "cone2 move left/right" stuff after I realised that the first one gets off center if you move the mouse around too quickly. That's the problem I was hoping you guys could solve. Thanks anyway, though.
As for the model, there are models in the gallery that are about the same size (like one of the dragons in the Medieval section), so though it IS big, it's not unreasonably so. It all depends on what your needs are. For example, there was a really creative kid from my old high school who wanted to make a super smash brothers movie, and he actaually was very good at making models from simple shapes, but it made anitmation very difficult. If I were to get that model's parts working, it would help him out wonderfully.

Oh ok, its just that I saw some other variables that kind of made it turn slow, so I just erased everything and did that. Is there a way that you can make it so that when the rolling pin moves, it makes the mouse go to the middle again? If you could do that then it wouldn't go so fast or off target, and it would make everything so much easier, they should add that into Alice 3.0.
Or maybe when the mouse moves to a certain point, it makes the point at which the mouse would turn the camera the other way, there. I might work on this tomorrow, but probably not until Monday because I still have to do 2 essays due Monday and don't have any time tomorrow!!! :(

I already made a very nice "Camera follow the mouse" type method based on the calibration method in that world, the best part of which is the fact that it turns with speed relative to the exact pixel amount which you move the mouse. I'm not sure about the object following method, though. I told you, I pretty much gave up on it, and I only give up on something like that if all of the ideas I've put into it haven't given me any progress whatsoever.

I have, however, added a bunch of cool stuff to the game already. So far:
-3 new weapons, 1 upgraded weapon (4 total)
-3 new powers, 2 weapon powers (5 total)
-The beginning of the class system
I've also been preparing models for use in my game and for Alice in general, like the one I posted earlier.

I only use low polygon models, and I haven't added any infinity loops (the main cause of lag in RP2), so it should be okay (filesize is 8.03mb right now, by the way).
There were a few 20000+ models I thought would be cool in the world, but are unnecessary.

And it's done! This is the most I've ever worked on a project, so I really do hope you guys enjoy it. It's HUGE though, so you may want to close your internet connection while you play, to free up processor power.
Another trick I've found helpful is playing the world, then doing few things (like shooting, pressing pause, letting the zombies kick you, etc.) and then restarting the world. I've noticed it tends to run faster when it's done it once before (cache memory?).
Anyway, here are the controls:
-Hold 'A' to turn left and 'D' to turn right
-Press 'S' to switch weapons forward, and 'X' to switch backward
-Press Space or Enter to puase the game and bring up the pause menu. From inside the pause menu, you can switch weapons, switch camera angles, buy guns, and buy abilities for your penguin (I've been using a computer with Windows Vista and Word 2003...I think, so I don't know if the fonts I used for the pause menu and HUD will shop up for you guys. If they don't, the text may disappear or run off the screen, so heads up.)
-Press 'Q' to repel the zombies, if you've bought the power.
-Hold 'Q' to slow down the zombies, but not the penguin if you've bought the power
-Press 'E' to use a shockwave which kills all zombies (except the big one, it just hurts him) if you've bought it.
-If you see the big one, pump him full of everything you've got, because he's REALLY tough (also, the penguin will automatically aim for him if he can)
-The Shining Lance now has two disadvantages: It's expensive, and one other hidden thing...
-You'll probably need Night Vision by Level 5. It's nearly impossible to see anything if you don't have it (I challenge someone to try and beat it without Night Vision)
-This version's HARD, but beatable. Try different combinations of powers and weapons and see what works for you
-My top score is 207 KOs
If you find any bugs (besdides lagging, because I expect that), tell me.

Indeed this was a great game.
I liked how the game was fun, entertaining and was a challenge after level 3. (lol)
The only thing I found difficult and I tried to change was the revolutions it turns. It was turning too slow. I figured out later after twitching it that you could make it a little faster without making it TOO fast.
Great game overall, oh and way to stick with the Halloween spirit. (LATE FAIL POST)

Thanks to you too, Kai. Interestingly it totally slipped my mind that I'd be done around Halloween. I'm not into Halloween stuff, but making this game has been fun, nonetheless. As far as the turning goes, it's SUPPOSED to be slow. Turn too fast, and the game's too easy. Also, you can buy faster turning in the upgrade shop. Also, if the penguin turns too fast, he becaomes FAR less accurate.

Alrighty, it's about time for another progress report. I'll go ahead and tell you what powers I have added right now. There are a few I don't know where to put, like which class matches it the best. What do you guys think?
-Doppelganger: a zombie kicks you, but gets filled with kunai instead of winning
-Freeze Time: the world gets iced over and time freezes. Doesn't affect the big one
-Quickdraw: Go into first person mode and click as many zombies as you can (the mouse moves the camera). At the end of quickdraw, the penguin automatically blasts each of the targets in order
-Sniper: Go into a first-person, point-and-click sniper rifle mode. Very lethal if you know how to use it.
-Spin Attack: Alright, this one's kinda silly and obvious, but you get a sword and you spin, KO'ing the zombies around you
I just yesterday finished coding for a spider enemy which drops from the top of the screen on a web, then crawls towards you and paralyzes you for 2 seconds.
Here are my plans for extra powers:
-Mid-air Raid: You throw a bomb in the air and try to click it before it falls. If you get it, it hurts all enemies onscreen. If you don't, it hurts only a few. Usable twice a level
-Death Blossom: If you have bullet time, activate it, then activate this power. The penguin will go into a firing frenzy which will take up a large amount of bullet time power, but has a high chance of hitting everything onscreen.
-Assassinate: Penguin teleports behind three random enemies and auto-KO's them (can work on the big one).
-Air Raid: Paint a target, then watch as it and anything near it gets blown up
-Counterstrike: (This one'll be tough to code) if a zombie has reared back to kick you, activate this power. It'll save you, and generate a damaging energy wave in front of you
So here's my question: What kind of power would a Blaster (laser expert) have? I was thinking I could give it the Freeze Time, like Megaman had in one of the original games, but then what else could it have (remember each class gets two powers, one which comes with the class and one which can be bought)? Maybe it could charge the Shining Spreader faster or something? I'm seriously drawing a blank.
Now, finally, I said I'd be including some neat explosion effects in RP4. I've included one such effect at the bottom of this post (I have lots more, but I'll release them when RP4 is complete).

my favortie upgrade is repel! I thought of two upgrades you might consider, I know you probably have you're hands full, but they might intrest you. one could be where the clouds all shoot giant lightning bolts that destroy all the zombies they touch! You could also make one where the zombies all slow way down for 1 second for some points, which you could buy in the pause menu.
Just an idea.
For the Blaster, maybe it could supercharge all Laser weapons, like the M16, Shining Lance, and Shining spreader?
By the Way, I added 2 pictures that could be used as some kind of title or cover. One has the Words Resident Penguin, One is For adding you're own text if you want to use them and you don't like the look of the words. hope you like them!

about seeing the zombies after you lose, you could also Try The EventsStopEscending, just to see if it works. Sometimes that helps you that when the light shines right, You can't see them there, even if they are 0% Opaque, I wonder if it would work!
He said that he left that in there on purpose. I guess if he really wanted to fix it he could just add to the ending method to turn all zombies IsShowing = false

A few people have asked for more levels in RP3 and for updates, so here you go, RP3.5. RP4 isn't quite done yet, so I hope this holds you over for awhile.
New Features:
-Option to play forever (I haven't tested it fully, as I haven't been able to actually get that far in the game. If someone could confirm that it works, that'd be great.)
-If you don't play forever, you now have 15 levels instead of 6.
-A new enemy: the spider! It can't kill you, but it can paralyze you for 2 seconds, so watch out!
-A cooler explosion for the Big One
-Bug Fixed: Zombies used to be able to hide behind or in front of the Big One and never be viable targets. Not anymore.
-Bug Fixed: Goalpost was backwards. Not anymore.
I expect bugs, especially in the pause menu, so if you spot any, tell me.

I can see that you have held off from the classes until RP4, but I really like the changes that you have made for 3.5. I noticed that the goal post is the right way this time as you have mentioned, which is better. Also I really like the spider that you put in. It takes quite a few shots to kill them, but enough for it to be fair, and I like the effect it has on you when it bites you (getting paralyzed XD, really nice and creative).
Also I liked the new explosion of the big zombie, but I think it should rock the screen a little bit (I have to learn how to do those animation things like the explosion, they could come in handy). Also I do remember the not being able to hit zombie glitch when the big zombie was there in 3.1, and although I have not encountered it yet, I am glad that you fixed it. Good job on the bug patching and keep up the great work for 4.0!! Can't wait for it, and yes, this will definitely hold me over until then, great job on 3.5.

That's only if you try to attach it from inside your post. Use the Manage Attachments button to browse through your files and attch it from there.

That' something I can't fix. Sometimes, especially for complex worlds, the speed slider can break stuff.
It actually should reset itself if you click "Stop," then "Play" again.

Well, I tried having it tested privately but that didn't work out so well, so I decided to tip my hand and post my work so far. Now, if you wish to test it out and give me feedback, you may, but be aware that if you're a competitor in the contest, you're helping me out, so it's up to you. I'm posting this in the hopes that non-competitors, like shaydon, veryuhbull, and cardsfan527, will check this out and tell me what's what.
So here's the list of vital details:
Added:
+Splatter animation for spider (not gory, just looks more like you squashed a bug, which you did)
+Opening title screen for beginning of game
+Opening Menu (only the start button works for now, press enter if you don't feel like clicking)
+Class Selection method (with cool pictures too! Not all of them work yet, though, see below)
+Blaster: arm cannon replaces Beretta as main weapon, can freeze time
+Marksman: walther nighthawk replaces Beretta as main weapon (may or may not work), can pull out a sinper rifle as long as one of the power keys is held to use as a powerful, one-hit kill weapon (can even kill the big one if you aim it right), can go into quickdraw mode where you scroll your mouse to move the camera and click on as many zombies as you can, then let go and the penguin shoots all the zombies you clicked in order.
+Slayer: Gets the master sword and a spin attack (I'll be adding more powers to all of them later, just be patient)
+Added death animations to the zombies
+Added sound effects for the Beretta only (try using it during bullet time)
+Added BGM. Should loop nicely. (keep your volume down, it's loud)
+Made the big one easier to kill. Guy was nearly impossible to get rid of with just the Beretta, so if you were unlucky enough to get him in round 1, you were pretty much hosed. Not anymore.
Removed:
-Extra levels and play forever mode (had to start from an older copy of RP3, but I planned to redesign them anyway, so it works out)
-The smooth zombie-kick method. It will now have an ever-so-slight pause before the penguin goes flying. This is because I'm working on a way for the penguin to be able to stop the zombies even if they're getting ready to kick him.
Coming Up Next:
~Powers for all the classes
~Sound for all the weapons
~Point images that float above the target you just hit
~More BGM (hopefully)
~More zombie animation (I'm hoping to give them a semi-good looking shuffle)
Remember, this is a beta version, so I expect LOADS of bugs. If you feel like telling me about them, fine. If not, I'm just giving you a peek as to what you'll be up against come July...hoho.

I'm sorry x2495iiii, but I have those same glitches that jediaction is getting. I don't know why, maybe we have the same version and we need to update or something, but I cannot buy things and the beginning text is larger than it should be. I do not have the music bug though.
If it happens when you post your final product, I will try just redownloading Alice 2.2.

Here is what it shows:
On the title screen it just says "RESS ENT" and I honestly didn't know what this meant until I clicked random buttons and found out that by pressing enter ("PRESS ENTER") it got the game to start.
Also, the Start/Options is a little big, but I don't know if it is like that on purpose.

It did save, but since fonts are stored on your computer, not in Alice, all it saved was "Ask computer if it has chiller font. If it does, use it, if not, use huge basic font."
That could be because the 3d texts now go outside their designated buttons.
Go to this site, download Chiller, and follow the installation instructions to see if it works then:

Yeah, we already solved that problem, it's a font issue. I mentioned that in my above post.
Odds are, he DID read your post and was agreeing with you and saying he had the same error. He doesn't necessarily have to say that outright, though.
Anyways, did either of you download Chiller from that link yet? I tried it myself and installing new fonts is painfully easy (unzip>copy>paste, really).
It did occur tome to replace the texts with billboards, but that would increase my filesize significantly, so I'd rather not do that.

It's been forever, so I thought I'd update you all on RP4 and ask you a question: How do you shoot when you play? Do you take the extra split second to line up your aim and then fire, or do you just click as fast as you can and hope for the best?
Well, I'm putting in an accuracy bonus which rewards you for hitting multiple zombies in a row without missing. Because some guns, like the Triple, have a wider range and can more easily be used to fire inaccurately and still hit targets, I may end up slowing down their rates of fire even more.
Got a few other plans too. Hopefully they can all be done in time for the contest. Don't want wongwanchap to win by default now do we? That'd be boring...

Not really. I was going to add some nice scripted content to RP to maybe make it faster and add some cool new features, but Alice 2.2 now doesn't even want to load. I'm forced to use 2.0 for the time being, and you all know how much I hate doing that.
Which reminds me, does anyone know an online copy of a functional, pre-edited (to enable scripting) copy of Alice might be? Or could someone possibly put theirs online, please?

I've made ten different trophies for different achievements completed in the version of the game posted below (or at least it will be posted, once I get home). This version is experimental and also has the ability to save your points, kos, abilities, and weapons when you press '0' (even after you get kicked) and re-load them if you hit restart and press 'L.' It also has grenades and a few other things that may or may not work. The trophies work, though, and they're all dependent on other things that work, so go nuts and try to earn all ten without any hints (and no, looking at/altering the program code isn't a hint, it's straight up cheating, and that's worse. So none of that.)

Not necessarily. It's possible to make trophies/achievements in games with save/load scripting, they simply don't carry over from game to game.

Well, unbelievably warm reception aside, here's the first run of the trophies. At the moment, there are 13 trophies, but no trophy list or real way to see which trophies you've earned. Rest assured, that's coming. I want to make sure this works well and looks better first. So, test it out, do some cool stuff, try to earn all 13 trophies (yeah I added three. Couldn't resist.)
New stuff you'll want to know:
-Throw grenades with 'r.' Holding r will hold the grenade and letting it go will throw the grenade at whatever enemy is targeted. If there isn't one targeted, he throws it a set distance away. Press r again while the grenade is in mid-air to detonate it prematurely. Careful, it will blow you up as well if you are too close to the explosion.
-Press 0 at any time to save your game.
-To load your saved game (only one file at the moment), restart first, then press 'L.'
- To have the game to load as soon as it starts when you hit re-start, set the auto-load variable at the very bottom of the world's variable list to true.
-Be careful not to try and load when you've never saved before, as it'll cause a world-stopping error.
-You should be able to save and load nearly all relevant game data, including weapons and abilities unlocked, trophies earned, current level, and even the selected camera angle and active weapon!
-Class changing is enabled, though most of them don't work. Right now, bomber is selected by default to enable grenades, though you can change to blaster to get the freeze time power. None of the other powers work properly, though. Also on the list of things to come.
-You should only be able to earn each trophy once. Any more than that and it's a glitch.
-If you beat the game, but want to keep your stats and restart, save after "you win" is displayed on the screen, restart, then load. Note, this only works after you've beaten the game. You cannot keep your stats on a new game that you've only beaten a few levels of.
Here's a list of the names of the 13 trophies. That should at least give you a small hint as to how to earn them.

Just want to let you know that this game does NOT work on Alice 2.0.

Yeah it does, since I made and tested the new content using 2.0, though the firing of certain guns will cause a world stopping, event-interruption error. And that's for BOTH versions.
EDIT: Updated version posted above. Error generated by firing automatic weapons fix'd. Trophy list button added (doesn't work yet). Slight glitch found by me during round 2 of testing (caused weapon to switch improperly when loading a saved game with a different weapon equipped) fix'd. Zombies slightly slower.
I did notice that my version of 2.2 stops when I load a saved game which has a weapon or upgrade purchased. Weird and annoying, but no doubt preventable in some tedious, workaround-type way. Just have to find the source of the error...

I think they should be the same font.
Im asking cos it says the font is Dialog.plain (which looks like a java function to me) and the 3D text is too big so it overlaps the other text, so I think I might need to install whatever font you set it to. I dont know, but can you please tell me.

Classes are just meant to add powers n stuff to the game, make it somewhat more entertaining, though since they're not finished, they're not adding much at the moment.
Saving and Loading I thought was kind of cool in the sense that you could pick up where you left off instead of having to play through the early levels again.
Lag huh... Not sure what I could do about that. There are too many moving objects on the screen at once. I wonder if the pause menu parts are being rendered constantly...
I do know that it runs smoother on Alice 2.2, though 2.2 has given me more errors than 2.0 has.

And I don't know if the b-up attack is called the midair knee attack, but I played it yesterday and that's what he says when you hit someone with it, then he grabs them, explodes them, and says yes (or hyesz). Meh.
That's an error I only get when I'm playing in an Alice seesion that previously stopped the world with an error. Close Alice and re-open it and see if that helps.

No problem. Apologies as well, I figured you guys all had agency fb installed, what with it being the default and all. I considered using a universal font like times new roman, but I thought that made the menu and hud look too fancy and out of place.

I think the furthest I got was Level 12. The spider often gets me because I'm pretty sure it's targeted but it's not, though I think at 12 I was just overwhelmed. :(
What I do is keep the left mouse button held, and spray while tossing grenades at large groups.
Grenades are extremely useful if the enemies get too close, since it's a lot faster than trying to shoot down all of them. However, you have to be careful, or it'll be so worth it ;) .

Rock on, dude, you're doing very well. Sorry about the error. I'm not quite sure why, but sometimes the save files don't read properly (they seem to me to write just fine). It's worse for me, though, since I have to restart Alice every time this happens.
How'd you get a full 360? I had to freeze time to get that one.
I'm really glad you like it so much, though.

This download seemed safe at first, but I dont know if you should trust it since windows just had to recover my hard-disk by doing a system restore and its went back to before the font was installed, so dont know if it was caused by the font or something else, but it gives you the font free anyway.
