I got really bored and decided to play around with lights and camera functions. yes i used the example to help me but i think i took it one step further.:) i made the orbits orf the rings more realistic by changing the style to abrupt.

Good grief, what's the younger generation coming to (don't answer :) )?

If you really get interested in lighting - which is a very interesting subject - there are some good tutorials at

Just something to play around with: Do you realize that the lighting in a point light can be set for negative numbers? Try doing that and choosing different color settings for the light.

lol sleeping...thats so old school:D i was thinking about making a animated model of our solar system with Alice. shouldnt be to hard. just alot of moons and planets to animate.

Ah, youth is wasted on the young - at my age I sleep anytime I can. :D At least you have one less planet to plot than Gabe and I did.

Seriously, if you want to do that (plot the planets, not sleep), there are some very nice free 3D models of the planets out on the web - just do a search.

One place to start: http://www.amazing3d.com/free/free2.shtml

Even easier, just get the .jpeg file and use it as a texture on a high poly sphere - see attached Jupiter file.

Good luck on building a solar system. Please post it if you finish it! I'd love to see it.

Here's an idea...

Try gathering whatever textures of planets you can.... any planet... and screw around with 'em, like inverting the colors.......Voila! A weird, alien version of a solar system.

...Dang, I'm awesome.

OMG, it's Kirk! I want an autograph! lol

Seriously, I'm sitting here, watching him find some pics on this site that people wouldn't expect to find in here. So a question arises: Why is there pictures of William Shatner in the website directory?

There's loads of weird stuff you'll find on the Alice server...one of these days I need to clean it up.

*I think* William Shatner came to visit what was then Stage3 Research and probably also the Entertainment Technology Center. Not sure of the reason for his visit. Could have been to give a talk or collaborate on a project. I honestly don't remember.

Is it just me, or is Kirk getting bigger each year? (Just kidding) :D

I didn't think it was possible to recreate the bridge of the Enterprise with alice.... that's a huge feat in my book. If anyone has the file, I would like to see it myself.... unless if it has to do with those bulky VR helmets! :)

Just a few points of clarification:

Yes, we did create a version of the original Star Trek series Enterprise bridge, and William Shatner "stepped inside" it via Virtual Reality headset when visiting Carnegie Mellon University. Here is a screenshot:

153

Shatner was at CMU researching a book he co-authored with Chip Walter entitled "I'm Working on That: A Trek From Science Fiction to Science Fact," a book about what the sci-fi series predicted, and what has really happened since then, in the science behind that science fiction.

On a personal note, having been a huge Star Trek fan as a kid, I was very honored by this visit. It's cool when you get to meet your boyhood idol; it's even cooler when it happens because he comes to visit *you*!

..........WHOOOOAAAA...... that was made with alice?!

.................That's the sort of thing that brings a tear to my eye... ;) .... and yet, I now wonder: If the original Enterprise bridge can be made, what about the Enterprise-E?

This one for those who don't know the letters...
