you could make a game but it can only be played in alice. since u cant export files yet :( at least not to my knowledge.

Alice files can be exported easily as an html file, allowing you to post them online.

I'm going to disagree with the "easily" part of Mr Nemo's answer - there is a lot of stuff that doesn't export - text balloons and opacity settings are two of the most annoying, at least for me - and other things that don't export well such as 3D text objects (see attached) and lighting settings. :( Also there seems to be some file size limits I can't figure out as well as some hardware-related limits (the latter not unique to Alice and probably the cause of the lighting problems).

Also, the recipients has to download some Java 3D files to view the results (click on the last link in the attached example) if they don't already have them on their computer.

The actual export is easy - just choose the option in the file menu, choose the directory where you want the files created (it has to already exist) and create the files. I've attached a simple example. (Warning - when I say this is slow to load, I'm talking minutes. Didn't actually think it worked until I happened to leave the room while it was loading and was surprised that it had actually loaded by the time I came back a bit later. ) To run it, you have to have all three files in the same folder.

I'm working on a first-person shooter right now... it isn't ANYWHERE near finished yet, but I have some basic weapons, and I know how to group the camera to them, but I'm still having some trouble in trying to create a whole new object out of them... can this be done, or am I stuck to making groups?

i'm trying to make a first person shooter game too, but i can't seem to find any good weapons, i was wondering if anyones knows where to get some weapon files for Alice like AK-47 or something like that. also if i have like a mountain terrain how do i keep my person stay on and not walk off or into the mountain?

To answer that question, you can do one of two things I've done (if you want to, I'm sure there are other ways). I either a) created whole weapons entirely from simple 3D shapes in the alice gallery (which is why I'm having trouble grouping them together into a new object), or b) there was a Revolver in the western gallery that I augmented with the shapes (but I'm having the same grouping problem here, too)

But that's just my suggestion. I'm sure if you poke around on the internet, there may be something you could import into alice....

Either that, or DrJim will probably say something on this. Hi jim. :D

Don't know why my name came up - Alice will have to have a talk with you  when she gets back from hunting.

Serious comment: There are a lot of objects available on the web (the only AK-47 I saw cost about $50, but the shotgun was free) but all of them I've downloaded take a lot of work to get into a format to be useable in Alice. I didn't post the shotgun model file because I still haven't got it's origin even close to correct and it's almost impossible to move predictably. Also I have found no way to save things as a group - would really like to know if such a thing exists.

Question for Gabe, et al: I know the Building Virtual Worlds (BVW) project has a policy against posting "shooter" and other "mature" games. Does such a policy also apply to this forum? (Personally, although I like a few games of that type, I think it would be a good policy here for the same reasons that it was established for BVW .)

....Ummm, when should I start running? This isn't gonna be a repeat of Dick Cheney's hunting accident, will it?

Anyway, that is pretty darn cool, but the idea of slapping a $50 price tag on a computer-rendered weapon seems awfully stupid (no offense to anyone here, it's only my thoughts). I mean, sure, a price tag would probably be appropriate to a top-level game design company like Ubisoft or something, but to the general public (including us alice people), it seems pointless unless if someone was EXTREMELY desperate for an AK-47 model.

Oh, god, ALICE'S COMING! RUUUN!!!!!!!

so wat kind of process is involved getting shotguns and such into format compatiable w/ alice?

Wish I could find a process - seems like every time I try I have to do something new and different. :(

To start, check out the thread :

http://www.alice.org/community/showthread.php?t=384. to give you some general ideas.

The only reliable way to create objects is via Smooth Teddy (see URL in the referenced thread). You probably could create a simple weapon there - that would give you a basic feel for the procedures.

Not ready to describe anything more in detail since it probably wouldn't work without several tries - but I'm working on it.. For creating new models, I have had fairly good luck (60-70% success) so far with Wings 3D and then converting with Biturn - save from Wings 3D in object format.

The source for the shotgun was http://www.amazing3d.com/free/free.shtml.

They appear to primarily cater to small graphics studio's that do work for ad agencies, etc. - not to the general public (since very few in the general public use 3D models :D ).

Well, I'm not too sure about your method because I haven't tried it yet, but here's a snapshot of my first weapon with the shapes...

:D It's a laser sniper rifle!
