Picture Problem

I'm having a problem with .jpgs that are too large and crash Alice when i try to use them as skins...Stuff can move afterward, but the view window goes black and is mostly unresponsive. I posted this question in the "Questions and Comments" section, but I haven't gotten a response so this seemed like a good idea.
