Whenever I try to load a .jpg that is too large into alice for use as a skin, Alice glitches, the display window goes black, and it remains, in general, unresponsive to most commands. Any idea on what the maximum size for any picture to be imported into Alice is?

Your problem may be the .jpg format, since it uses a lossy compression algorithm, not the size of the picture. I have had problems with anything but .bmp or .png formats.

As far as maximum size, I suspect that may be machine dependent – at least it seems like that for me. I use a rough rule of thumb of 64 pixels/”Alice meter” and try to stay under ten meters – this keeps me well under 1 M and nearly always seems OK. When there is a problem, I find it hard to trace to a specific texture.

This is just my experience - I've never seen anything documented except that Alice always "rounds" the image edge dimensions to a factor of 2 - something that can occasionally give odd results.

I’d really like to hear other people’s experience in this area. :)
