View Full Version : Roses and Thorns

Hi! I'm a CS undergraduate doing research on computer science education for children. To help with my background exploration, I'd like to hear some of your favorite and least favorite aspects of Alice (hence, "roses" and "thorns"). I apologize if something similar has been covered in another thread--if so, I'd appreciate if you could direct me there!

I'm interested in all of your experiences and insights, but the following questions especially interest me:
- How appropriate is Alice for the middle-school age group (10-14)? When is the best time to start to learn programming?
- What does Alice do best?
- What are some areas in which the Alice software can be improved?
- What are some inherent limitations in Alice as a teaching tool for computer science?
- What are students' favorite and least favorite parts of working with Alice?
- How effective is Alice in teaching concepts that transfer to other modes of programming?
- Do you know of any good papers/articles analyzing Alice's effectiveness, other than those on Alice's website?
- If you were to conjure up a new educational software to teach programming, what would it be like?

Thanks so much for your time! You can feel free to leave your comments on this thread or send me a private message.

well as far as the age goes I know a 10 year old that I taught how to use it. He has already surpassed me in about a month, and I've been using Alice for about a year. I'm 16 and I love it. I have a 9 year-old brother that cannot figure it out yet so 10 is about the minimum. My younger brother uses scratch instead, which is even more basic than Alice is.

as far as what you can do with it, just look up Alice computer programing videos on YouTube. If you have Alice downloaded then just surf the forums for some of the projects that others have made and see how you like them.
All in all I think Alice is a LOT of fun

hope this helps
