Look at the links on the Alice main page, http://www.alice.org/ , and also do a search of the forum for posts by Randy Pausch - he has posted some storys about the "early days."

Just checked both the download links for Alice 1.0 that are listed on the main Alice page and both seem to be inactive. :(
