I was wondering what program was used to create the models installed by default in alice? I've used an Open Source program called Blender some(www.blender.com) I was wondering if this tool could be used to max models that I could use in the alice program. I know I have heard some talk about 3D Studio Max but I would perfer not to plunk down money for that...(Also I don't think it works on linux....)

3D Studio Max was used by the Alice team - there is a good tutorial on the main page. Also browse the "Share Objects" section for information.

The main problem is getting into the .ase format from other, more common formats. While there are conversion programs available (Biturn is most commonly used), there are lots of problems with surface normals, etc.

Blender is supposed to have a conversion to .ase capabiliy as a separate, independently created script, but nobody has ever reported using it successfully with Alice. Personally I find Blender so hard to use that it is almost worthless - but there are at least a few people who feel otherwise. It does generally perform as advertised once you've figured it out, unlike some other 3D programs. A lot of the problems of importing 3D models into Alice is that the files get corrupted even before the "convert to .ase" step.
