Exclamation 3d designing software - 11-09-2009, 02:59 PM

Hi, I want to make objects of my own but i dont want to spend any money on designing software. Does anybody know of some free software that is compatible with alice?

also i am creating a game where the camera is controled by the arrow keys, so it doesnt let me go through buildings forward which is great, but if i go backwards it lets me go though the building. Does anybody know how i can get the camera from moving backwards through the buildings? In addition does anybody know how to arc a grenade?

Software: Blender and Biturn. Blender is a free, Java-based software with lots of plugins to handle lots of different 3d model formats, as well as a very powerful object designing capability. Biturn is a small but very functional application written to make file conversion simple and easy, and it succeeds in spades, especially when converting bleder models (.3ds, .obj, etc.) into .ase format, which is compatible with Alice.

Backwards: No idea, except making a marker-based detection system which checks to see if the camera is too close to a wall (or other solid object) and can make the camera go forward while the back key is pressed, cancelling the movement.

It's complex, but reliable. There are many, many tutorials, and even an online book, which can help you to hone your skills at Blender.

Update on the answer to the original question:

Blender and SmoothTeddy have been recommended by Dr.Jim, the expert on the subject. You'll need Biturn to convert them to .ase models (alice friendly) though. Check my How To Import Objects sticky at the top of the How Do I...? forum for more info.

Using two do together methods, you can create the illusion of an arc:

do together
grenade move forward 5 meters style begin gently
grenade move up 2 meters style end gently

do together
grenade move forward 5 meters style end gently
grenade move down 2 meters (or distance above ground) style begin gently

Ok, i was able to download biturn. But how do you decompress RAR files? I tried downloading 7-Zip but vista won't let me. Can win-zip do that?

Hope I helped!:D Time for you to return the favor...JK!

7-zip is best (vista SHOULD let you, as I have vista as well and it let me)

Win-zip should work too, though.

One thing i have to say is biturn is very complex and i dont like it. Alice has always had a problem of going though objects backwards and there is no way of fixing that without a collision code

Biturn is? You sure you don't mean Blender? All Biturn does is bring up folders like Windows Explorer, then highlights the compatible files in those folders so you can click them, see a preview, and convert them to a different format with a pick of the menu and a touch of the button.

That's just about as user friendly as it gets. No keyboard shortcuts needed, no tiny, complex interface elements, just load, pick, click.
