Request: Gradius Style Options

Does anyone know how I can make options that follow the player, like they do in Gradius. I've tried to figure this out, but I think this may involve some unusual and complex math.

Here is an example. The options are the little glowing circles that follow the player's ship. Notice how they follow the ship like a trail.
