use ask user for string functions

We are trying to do a video game of paper,rock,scissors and we are at the point were we ask the user for a string and its not letting us drop it in the if /else statement.
How do we ask a user for a string? Do we have to use it in a method or a function? Are there any parameters involved?

There should be a function that automatically does this in world.functions.

we already tried adding the function into if/else statement and it didn't allow us to drop it.
