Default Using Alice for helping kids with Autism - 07-17-2008, 09:11 PM

I was wondering, is anyone is currently using Alice to create animations to help children with Autism?

Hmm... i guess this could be a good or bad idea depending on the degree of their autism. I've worked with disabled people all of my life, and i know that there are some that would find it too complicated, while others would absolutely love the organization techniques used to create animations with this program. I guess it really just depends on the personality of the student

Your public profile on Alice reads as follows:

About sk8r4life1
Occupation High School Student

Yet you say, "I've worked with disabled people all of my life..."

Although those two things aren't necessarily in conflict, they do sound rather unusual. I would be interested in a clarification if you are willing to provide one. That would help me to interpret the credibility your many posts on a wide variety of topics.

I didn't mean having them create the animations. I mean, using the package to create simple interactive animations that the children can watch to teach them. We use something called "social stories" for my son with autism to teach him behavioral concepts that he has a hard time with. Using Alice to create some simple 3-D animated social stories would be appealing and effective, I think. I'm actually working on some now for him. I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with this as well.

Not sure about autism specifically, but there was some work at several New Jersey schools a couple of years ago with Alice and people with various disabilitys. A quick serch turned up the following:

and a few of the worlds posted in the 2005-06 timeframe were from that effort - and were generally quite good.

Can't find much recent, unfortunately. Seems like a missed opportunity.
