Creating new functions

While I love that Alice 3 has more sophisticated models and the dual window option for viewing the Java code I am finding some frustration with parts of the interface. How do you create your own functions? My students and I would like to be able to check properties of certain objects like opacity or color to determine whether or not the user can earn points etc. I can't seem to find a way to do this. Suggestions?

In Scene Tab, click on the object in question in the type hierarchy pane, then add a function for that object.
