End a loop?

I'm making a movie where at one point a guy falls off an island and lands in water with sharks swimming around. The sharks are swimming in a loop(infinitely) and I want them to stop to move towards the guy. Any way to do that? Image is part of the code of the sharks swimming in a circle.

EDIT EDIT: I dont want to create another annoying thread, so is there a way to measure distance other than trial and error?
