online game?

i want to make a alice game that you can play online but i don't know how.

kjobrien 06-25-2010 11:51 AM

Aweseome sounds awesome

I love the idea and I too have also wanted to try something multiplayer, hopefully online. I wsh I was alot better in alice so I could tell you how, but my 4th week of class is comming up 6-29-2010 my first test. No pronlem ill blow that thing away I spend alot of time with alice and I know there alot a question I will not be able to get answaered there. I think nthe idea is great

zonedabone 06-25-2010 01:08 PM

Sadly, it currently can't be done with our knowledge.

We are working hard to make a game that uses the internet, but it can't be played in a web browser.

kjobrien 06-25-2010 01:17 PM

Now that you say that it does sound kinda hard

I did not even think of having to run the game through a browser. I can just imageing the problems there would be. I still think it would be an awesome idea. That or being able to make some animation in 3D, have the been any attemts at that?

beachbum111111 06-27-2010 05:31 PM

i just hope we can find out soon

arty-fishL 06-28-2010 05:29 PM

online multiplayer

Ive got two methods of doing this that I am working on.
One uses an ftp connection, but this is slow and can be unreliable, say the server is down, like mine is now:mad:.
The other forms a direct connection using sockets and ports and stuff between the computers. This seems to be much faster and is not affected if the server is down (cos its a host-client thing, there is no server). Problem is, so far this requires users to know the other persons connection details, ive got to work on this, and Alice freezes when trying to start the script. The python interpreter doesnt freeze on me, but Alice is less reliable.
So I will post again when I get things working more.

zonedabone 06-28-2010 09:19 PM

arty! there's a problem with connections between computers without a server. Two computers that aren't within the same router would have to be in the DMZ to communicate, and we ARE NOT putting Alice users' computers in the DMZ. That's why we need a server.

I'm working into getting a server to host via python on a nonstandard port. This would allow for a GREAT connection, using the same reliable features of standard website hosting. The easiest way to do this would be with a VPS, but those cost money.:(

jediaction 06-28-2010 09:52 PM

You should look at past conversations beach bum and you will see that we've had conversations like this before about online. Connecting to Alices on the same computer has been done. I'm learning about scripting in networking games and if i can figure that out, mabye i can use that knowledge for Alice. Just a thought

I know this, there were all these discussions around this subject when Zenteo released his online thing, that's why I have started work on the insecure network, as I sent to you in a pm, if I can get this to work properly then I can work on a secure network, which I have already partially started. This is to be followed by something related to what you said above.
You cant start at the hardest end, you've got to work your way up.
and as for this:
reliable features of standard website hosting
I disagree, so far I have had three of my accounts suddenly deleted on 3 different hosts, including everything I had stored on them.

beachbum111111 10-21-2010 10:25 AM

can't you i make an online game like what they do with xbox live and roblox and all those games???

beachbum111111 10-23-2010 11:55 AM

can someone please just help me with this please?

x2495iiii 10-23-2010 12:44 PM

Define help.

We've already pretty much answered your question: it CAN be done, it's just difficult and impractical to do with Alice.

If you want someone to help you make the game, though, that's another question entirely.

Dameria 10-23-2010 02:57 PM
can someone please just help me with this please?
No, I don't think that anybody here is going to help you with it, sorry. Like X said, too impractical.

beachbum111111 10-23-2010 06:00 PM

I'm not a pro with alice like you guys but can someone show me how to make an online game???

darn... this is what the the game i was going to make was going to look like... i know its crappy and the collision detection sucks and you cant fire your weapon but there's no point in it now... :(

Dameria 10-23-2010 09:13 PM

You can still finish the game, it doesn't have to be multiplayer. You can have maybe one mission that you have to do, or shoot at targets. There has never (to my knowledge) been a game created with Alice that has multiplayer capabilities (I said game, so the Chat doesn't count), and yet there have still been great games created with Alice. Don't give up just because you can't have multiplayer, it can still be fun without multiplayer.

DensetsuNoKaboom 10-24-2010 07:01 AM

You could set different controls to different keys and make it so that all players share the same keyboard.

Unfortunately, that requires that all players be at your computer.

Alternatively, if you're really obsessed with getting online multiplayer to work, I suggest you begin learning Jython.

beachbum111111 10-24-2010 12:03 PM

or with the level i made i could make a halo firefight game...

beachbum111111 10-25-2010 01:51 PM
has anyone even looked at my game so far???
Well I saw the screen shots. The Gun could be better textured. If you find one, can I have it. I asked earlier if anyone had a Reach Assult Rifle and looks like you are the only one who does. If you find a higher textrued one. Please tell me. The Shields are cool, but they dont actually work. The HAlo game that i'm making, I made a real Shield system. When the game comes out....which is really really soon....gonna put up a count down; Its going to be awesome

debussybunny563 10-25-2010 08:45 PM

Umm, wrong person?

Umm, jedi, that was MY screenshot of a demo HUD for REACH, with none of the features implemented.

Get your facts straight, jedi. :p
lol man

The MA37 won't be up for sale till I finish/almost finish my own Halo tribute.

Oh yeah? When MY game comes out, it's gonna have a REAL Armor Lock system, it's gonna be AWESOME!
Not to mention weapon switching and a total ammo count kept track of in the top right, RADAR (motion sensor, if you will), and more!
Working armor/health bar, and the newly introduced reticle bloom!

And, @beachbum:
A nice beginning, but one issue I had was the ground shaking/character shaking a lot.
As you said, not many features yet, but post your updates so we can see your progress! :D

Dameria 10-25-2010 09:09 PM

Can't wait for your halo game to come out debussybunny, looks like its gonna be good.

Nice.

Unfortunately, I can't use them, 'cuz none of them have subparts.

Furthermore, each object is a rectangular prism, and the "objects" you see are actually just a billboard.

I'm a dummy. WWAAAHHHH!!!

Still, the objects' pivots are reasonably messed up, and WAY too many subparts for my liking.
The advantage, though, is that the entire object will be properly textured, since if you combine subparts, the texture won't fit properly.
Still can't use 'em. Bah.

And my game that I have worked so hard on. Its gonna be cool to you know. But Alice cant take forever amounts of objects. Armor lock? hmm, that will be interesting. I'm trying to do the Radar. Its gonna have some cool features to. Are you trying to compete?
