History of Alice

Could you please explain the history of Alice. Alice 99, and the latest build of Alice, version 2.0b, are available on the site, but other versions are not. Could you please explain the history of the versions between these releases. In what release did scripting get disabled, and can it be enabled in the latest release of Alice 2.0b. Why are the intermediate releases of Alice not available?

Thanks.

There were no versions of Alice between Alice99 and Alice 2.0. There were many beta releases of 2.0, but these mostly accounted for bug fixes, not really major changes.

Scripting was dropped in 2.0. It can be enabled again, but you will have to go through the source code and modify it yourself.

Alice is open source and the source code can be downloaded by scrolling to the bottom of the Alice download page:

We do not provide support for source code modification, as we are a very small group and have our hands tied in upcoming projects.

FYI, Alice 2.0 is no longer in beta, so we have dropped the 'b' from the title.

Good luck!

The Alice99 website is archived here:

If you can't find the source code there, I will need to look for it.

I'd only found the executable file

Hi.
I'd searched Alice99 before and I've only found the executable file.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for posting the link - I'd lost track of where the old version was. The current link there to Takeo Igarashi's website is also worth looking at.

Anyone actually trying to run some of this code should use the oldest machine and OS that they have - it is research code and isn't maintained or updated. Almost none of it will still run "as is" on my newest machines.
