Alice Mods

I've started making mods for Alice. I'm going to post all of them here.

You need to use the Alice launcher for them.

Since the Alice Launcher is only for Windows and mods are for any os, I am planning on making some sort of Mac/Linux installer thing, but for now Windows users only - sorry.

Play Fullscreen
This mod allows you to play Alice worlds fullscreen. You will no longer have to deal with windowed worlds, but instead get to experience maximum use of your screen's real estate.

You can play in fullscreen from the mod's menu:

Or by pressing CTRL+F5 (F5 alone still plays windowed)

You can toggle fullscreen/windowed mode for the play button by right clicking it:

If you hold shift while pressing the play button it will do the opposite of the mode it is currently in.

Allows objects to be merged together.
Instead of trawling the web for models, or creating your own ones you decide to just make something up out of the objects and shapes in the Alice gallery.

Then you hit an issue - you cannot merge these objects, you cannot create subparts - they are not part of one object. This has especially bad implications if you want to export the model as one piece to be used again.

So here is my solution: as part of my project I am developing I have designed a simple UI that allows objects to be glued together.
Phew its been a while, I don't know if anybody will remember this, so cast your eyes across the original threads:

Texture Tools
This mod adds a few quick access tools for editing texture images directly in Alice. It also allows you to view and export texture images, so they can be edited in an external image editor (especially useful for changing textures of built in objects).

After choosing a menu option, a popup will show up.
Either drag and drop an object from the Alice object tree into this popup (it will allow you to choose a texture from that object or if there is only one, it will choose that one)
or you can go to an object's properties (including the world), expand "Texture Maps" and drag and drop one of these ino the popup.

Alicedoc
This adds info tooltips for stuff. I know its not a particularly exciting mod, but its really useful. This adds Javadoc-like functionality to Alice. It doesn't add doc exports, but rather info tooltips on mouseover of stuff in Alice, like you get in Eclipse.

Descriptions are easy to add and help is available from the mod's menu in Alice.
You can add Alicedoc descriptions to methods, functions, objects and variables.
You can export objects with their descriptions (see help for variable descriptions).
All data is stored in standard Alice comments and variables, so worlds will still work if this mod is not installed.
Descriptions are somewhat compatible with methods and functions from worlds not designed for this mod as they are read from the top comments of the method.
Can't wait. By the way, I'm working on a platform game, do you have any ideas/suggestions/things I should keep in mind?

bob3584 02-10-2013 10:15 PM

Nice.

If you want ideas you should probably start a new thread. With that said, I think a Metroid style game would be interesting.

bob3584 02-11-2013 06:46 PM

What would that be? A platform game?

New Mod - Texture Tools

Another new mod is out: Texture Tools.

Things brings basic texture editing functions directly into Alice, including the ability to expot a texture image.

This is just a straight port of the Texture Tools addon (ie Java to Python). I am improving the mod and will release an update that has a sort of preview window with buttons to apply effects instantly and a pen tool. It will also have a function to allow you to directly edit a texture image in an external editor.

bob3584 03-04-2013 01:52 PM

Can you export it to, say, Gimp?

arty-fishL 03-04-2013 03:03 PM
Can you export it to, say, Gimp?
Yes. There are three ways of doing that (they are less complicated than these descriptions may make them seem):

A. By changing your default editor

Make Gimp your default image editing program
B. By using the feature designed for this

Use "Edit Texture in External Application" as before.
When paint opens, close it.
In the popup window in Alice, click the "Copy Path" button.
Open Gimp and use File > Open (or CTRL+O).
Click the little icon in the top left that has a pencil on paper.
Paste in the text (CTRL+V) into the Location bar that is now visible.
Finally press the ENTER key to open it.
Edit the image, save it and then click the "Done" button in Alice, as before.
C. By exporting, editing and importing again

Use "Save Texture Image to File".
Save to a memorable location.
Open up the file in Gimp and edit as you wish.
Use "Replace Texture Image From File".
Find the image file.
Options A and B create a temporary file that deletes itsef, this method doesn't, so you may wish to delete the image file after use.
bob3584 03-04-2013 06:02 PM

Ok, thanks.

jalk 03-11-2013 09:22 PM

is this for alice 3.1 or 2.2?

New mod - Alicedoc

I've made a new mod, Alicedoc.

Read its description at the top, its not particularly exciting, but its really useful.

I will be adding Alicedocs to my tool objects, like the Save Tool, to make them easier to use, so I advise installing this mod even if you don't want to personally use it.

sfunk 04-07-2013 03:51 PM

I'm surprised to see you are still active on these forums Arty. It's awesome that you are still improving Alice past it's initial stages.

arty-fishL 03-13-2015 11:19 AM

Fixed Stuff

Fixed a bunch of warnings and errors under the hood on every mod.
Fixed the Alice Launcher for Alice 2.4.

Auto Update
Mods should update automagically.
One of them might claim the download is corrupt, it isn't, just click "install anyway".

Manual/Fresh Install
Or you can get the latest mods via the Alice Launcher:
open it, click on "Mods" tab, click on "Store" sub-tab.
For some reason there are three "Play Fullscreen" mods showing there, just install the one that is version 1.2.
Installations might also claim the download is corrupt, they are lying, just click "install anyway".

Really-Manual Install
I might update the download links earlier on in this thread later.
