Hate Alice? Rant about it here!

I am tired of seeing threads/posts on the Alice Forums stating that Alice sucks, so I would like to centralize those complaints here. If you hate Alice, please rant about it here.

You can simply say that Alice sucks, or you can explain why.

Also, if for some strange reason, you feel the need to spam, I won't care, but it is for the Administrators/Moderators to decide whether or not you are banned.

Please however, avoid trolling. Thanks!

Alice isn't bad because it has way too many errors and bugs, especially that annoying "Error during simulation" thing. I should be able to stop a method mid-way without having to worry about the world crashing. If this problem was eliminated, I would be a lot more active with Alice, but I've quit for a while because of the frustration.

Unsupported features and cross-compatibility issues are annoying as well. One of the worst problems is when Alice is unable to open the file. All of your work is gone.

Alice also has lag issues. One of the reasons my Halo thing hasn't been finished. It can't handle a DMR and an MA37 in the same world. Shooting the MA37 will cause a huge FPS drop.

I might have forgotten a few things, but other than the things I've mentioned, it's a really nice program. It works better for games that are more 2-D (like x2495iiii's Sleight Blind), and unfortunately I like making FPSs. :o
I really do like the program though, and would love to try Alice 3.0 once it's out of beta.

I am in no way discouraging people from using it. It's great, but just remember that there are a LOT of bugs. ;)

I wish there was some way to get rid of these bugs by modifying Alice's Python Code, but apparently the bugs are in the JavaScript because I tried everything that came to my mind.

(Please dont ban me,just my opinion!)

I love Alice 2.2,but i dont really like Alice 3 that much for now.
First,it really takes alot of time to install it,and the installation strangely glitched.(it was up to atleast 50%,then it suddenly went down to 23% or something)

I think they should have kept it the way Alice 2.2 was.I couldn't even add an object in the new Alice 3,while Alice 2.2 was way more simple.

Other than that,it has great graphics and some new methods.I hope they improve it in the next versions!

x2495iiii 07-11-2011 05:51 PM

I don't ban people unless they give me a good reason to do so. Or if they're caustically ignorant. Sometimes not even then.

sfunk 07-11-2011 06:38 PM

How about ranting about the forums itself? because it seems lately that all these forums have become is egotistical ravings that aren't even half deserved, just because you know more about Alice then another user doesn't give you the right to be a total jerk to them, and how about actually helping them? yeah giving a link to an old project might help, but a lot of times it's young kids who have no idea whats going on with the code, And even the models that I spent my own time on for members of the community and even the ones I did in my spare time so members could have more obects to use came under critical criticism, if you can do it so much better, why not do it yourself? People should be happy,I have given up many hours of my own time to help this community by offering many objects and a crap load of tutorials for new users, if they aren't good enough, do it better then! and stop being so critical and pretentious.

TauTrumpsPi 07-11-2011 07:58 PM

If you're trying to get all posts from alice haters, they probably won't see this thread by a few days from now, so I doubt it will work for that long.

Dj Tech42 07-11-2011 08:58 PM

I think Alice is a an amazing idea, but it just isn't implemented in the best way. Hopefully, Alice 3 will make everything better. :D

Things that should definitely be added are:
1.Collision Detection (Real, not workaround)
2.Saving to a file while running a world (text files, or even better, save the state of the world)
3.Option to have camera follow mouse movement (like in FPS, not dragging the camera)
4.Executable export
5.Better web export

These features would make it the ultimate free game creation tool.

x2495iiii 07-11-2011 09:06 PM
stop being so critical and pretentious.
I noticed that too. At least it's better than getting no input at all. Getting criticism at the very least motivates you to surpass yourself.

sfunk 07-11-2011 10:56 PM

Dj, those would definitely boost Alices' reputation for sure, although collision would certainly be incredibly tough to achieve. and X yeah, some response is better than none I suppose, but it's usually constructive criticism that motivates more than deconstructive

jediaction 07-11-2011 11:06 PM
I appreciate it.
this wasn't towards any particular person, plus you were never critical of the objects I made, I asked you to review them for me, and you would, that was helpful(constructive) but sometimes you and a lot of other members have acted kind of jerkish towards other members, especially when it came to helping others(like when they didn't understand) I understand it's frustruating trying to help others when they don't seem to understand anything, so either try harder or say you just can't help. and when people do a first time project(like first time converting) it seems like a cow going to slaughter at times since the objects they convert are tore apart by the more experienced members without any actual help or guidance on how to do better.thats why your reviews have been pretty helpful to me since I always know what to improve upon, and it's not like you act like you know everything about models, but you know what they need to do to fit your need, which is what a designer needs to think about, but sometimes you do get a little arrogant when it comes to your halo game, I won't deny that I would be pretty proud of making something like that as well, but there is a point were got to tone a bit.

jediaction 07-11-2011 11:24 PM

I hate it when I cant help, and trust me. I have said it in pms many times.

sfunk 07-11-2011 11:36 PM

yeah, there is nothing wrong with not being able to help, and you have done some great things with alice, just keep up the good work without getting a big head while doing it, and there are a lot of members like that, so don't take that as a personal offence.

jediaction 07-11-2011 11:44 PM

I'm not offended. I'm tired so I dont really care, lol, but thanks

arty-fishL 07-12-2011 03:21 AM

Wow, sfunk, those are long posts. Hope I haven't offended anybody too much, at least not without making up for it.
Although "jerks" on these forums can get a bit "critical and pretentious", its still a helluva lot better than other forums I've visited, trust me.

sfunk 07-12-2011 03:45 AM

well this was a thread to rant, so why not rant away right? haha and my point wasn't to offend anyone, it was just to make people see that just because you were once the top dog, doesn't give you the right to treat otehrs poorly,

jediaction 07-12-2011 09:10 AM

Amen. Lol

^ This.

Other forums I go to have mods who mess with people's accounts just because they can. At least I don't do that. Much.

1. Agreed, but they should only have cube, prism, and Sphere collisions. That would far reduce the amount of lag

2. Agreed, thank you Arty for solving this problem for me

3. You can do that, with a bit of programming with "mouse distance from left/right/top/bottom side" thing

4. DEFINITE AGREE

5. Meh, I wouldn't use it, but I bet others would

well honestly the best forum I ever been on was a kingdom hearts forum, but the forum got old pretty quick since so many new members would join and old members would drop out so frequently, they were always nice people though

jediaction 07-12-2011 04:31 PM

The best forums I have been in is the Alice Forums...
duh...hope everyone sees this part, or I will get a lot of comments about my post above.

This thread should be stickied at the top of the forums so all the complainers are funneled into here. :)

I'll have to ask X to work on that.
No.
i agree, it would give the forums a bad name.

jediaction 07-16-2011 05:03 PM

I AGREE!. Lol

David B 07-16-2011 09:16 PM

Yeah. I guess it would make the fact that people hate Alice too obvious.

Dj Tech42 07-16-2011 10:01 PM

They should improve Alice so there isn't enough reason to hate it. :D It's mostly because of how buggy it is most of the time.

Alice with mods can be pretty awesome, though. Although, I still can't get the save to file object working :(

jediaction 07-16-2011 11:19 PM

Yah. I wish I had artys alice, but my splash image....that could be arranged

David B 07-17-2011 09:41 AM

If I remember correctly, Arty uploaded a zip file with the modified source files to my "Cool Alice Hacks" thread.

David B 07-20-2011 02:21 PM

Would the person who said that they hate Alice be willing to step forward with their argument? I don't care if you don't, but it would be nice to hear a reason.

Nighthawk0973 07-20-2011 02:23 PM

I think Alice is great, it has soem very lacking elements though and I would hate to have to use it for my school:

A. Because the teacher would be instructing me how to use a program that I could make games with when I was 12 :D

B. Becuase I'd rather be learning something more productive, like acual Java. Sure, I already know Java, but I could probably get in an advanced class of some sort and learn more :D
They should improve Alice so there isn't enough reason to hate it. It's mostly because of how buggy it is most of the time.

I think that people would 'Hate' it because they'd rather do something besides sitting on the computer and doing something they don't understand/care about. They might want to watch TV, play video games, or play sports. It's great that people get to use this program and all, but it'd really suck to have a time limit on when to finish a project.

I'd rather do it on my own time on what I want, and have it be my choice to do it, no the schools. Man, people 'rant' alice more on youtube comments:
**** you alice you *****

totally unessecary. It was the comments of somebodys alice project....

simsman2011 07-29-2011 10:03 AM

There is a dangerous bug that when adding an object like a house or barn the other objects can move THROUGH THE WALLS of that object...........
But Alice is a great program if you want to learn how to program

Dj Tech42 07-29-2011 10:42 AM

That happens because Alice doesn't have built-in collision detection.

You want collision detection, program it yourself.

NOT a bug

I actually like that Alice doesn't have collision detection. What if you wanted to make a program where you had to pass through objects?
