I haven't found a real easy way to get things precisely positioned in Alice.

For the checkerboard, trying to create the board in 2D and import it as a billboard. At least for .png files, Alice's import function will support alpha level transparency. You can then place the billboard where you want it and tilt it for the best camera angle.
