I've always tried different things for that.

Sometimes using a png billboard of a muzzle flash will work

Sometimes using the spinningFire object or whatever it's called works (that's what I did for RP)

Another good method: importing one of the explosion objects found around the forums and using a few of the frames played quickly in order.
