I remember a little while ago when someone made something like this. Does anyone remember who made it?

I like how it makes my Alice crash upon start. Silly JOGL mode.
Using a little transparency trick, you can use thin portals as the game does.
The trick:
If the opacity of an object is less than (but not 0) the opacity of another object, the first object will not be seen when placed behind the polys of the second object as seen by the camera. If the object of lesser transparency is placed in front, then transparency works great. I can use this to great effect by placing .1% (More or less 0%) transparent boxes in front of 99.9% transparent objects (More or less 100%) to mimick the affect of them disappearing (or reappearing) in space, similar to what they did with the missiles in The Girl Who Leaped Through Space.
