Alice 2.2 closes abruptly w/o warning

**Alice 2.2 closes abruptly w/o warning -** 09-19-2008, 07:46 AM

I'm running Alice 2.2 on some student laptops. We installed the copy of Alice 2.2 that came with the Dann, Cooper, Pausch 2nd Ed text.

Machines are: Win XP Pro SP3; Dell 630 Latitidue, 1.8GHz Intel Core2 Duo, 2G RAM.

Several students are experiencing unannounced shutdowns of Alice. No error message, no warning.

Others in class are running 2.0 version downloaded from Alice.org website. It appears the problem is isolated to those students running the 2.2 version.

Any ideas would help. I've moved to install only 2.0 on all machines, but am not yet sure that will solve the problem.

I'm very surprised that version 2.2 came with the text. I have seen nothing in the forum that indicates that it is other than "beta" (i.e., buggy) code at this point. Certainly my own experience with the code indicates that - and at least the last time I checked, there was not a download version even available.

My suggestion would be to stay with ver 2.0. You can use nearly all the 2.2 "walking people" models simply by moving those files into the gallery for 2.0.

We had the same problem with Alice 2.2 closing suddenly. We thought that maybe our image was defective so we downloaded both version 2.0 and 2.2 and tried them on a few machines and neither of them crashed. We were able to determine that the 2.2 version on the CD was the one crashing and is not the same as the 2.2 download. One notable difference was the textbook tab is missing on the download version.

The version of 2.2 included with the text is a very early release. I do not recommend using it. The version online is more stable. Functionality-wise, the online version does not lack anything from the CD. There is a version that includes the textbook worlds -- it is directly below the base version on the download page.

Yeah. It's called 2.2.

I highly doubt it, since from what I've heard the development team is small, and all of their efforts are focused on 3.0.
