Alice 3D environment/engine

Hi!

I am trying to develop something very similar to the Alice environment.
The basic idea is generating a 3d animation based in some simple inputs from the user.
The application is for people who are not very skilled using computers so the commands should be easy to understand.
The input will be a sequence of actions and the result is the animation of some character/s.
I don't know how to start.
For the GUI part you are using Swing? What about the engine? I know this information maybe not be really open but I will thank any piece of advice.
