Exclamation PC hardware issue: fans - 05-23-2012, 04:37 PM

I'm having a slight problem with my computer that I haven't had with any other computers. When it starts up the fans make a really loud generator-type noise.

It wears off after 5 minutes or so and doesn't happen if the computer has recently been switched on. It never used to do this and has been getting increasingly louder and has been taking increasingly longer to calm down.

It just happens with the fan on the side of the case, not the fan on top of the motherboard or the one next to the graphics card. Apart from the noise, there are no other related or non-related issues and the temperature seems fine (I've got a temp display on the front of the case).

Any help would be much appreciated, I'm just worried something is wrong with it.

Have you tried cleaning the fan off? or maybe the motor that controls the blade is wearing out (since the way you describe it sounds sort of like a remote control car motor does when it's about to burn out)

If you are stuck on a project, check out the tutorials I made here at this link:

There are lots of tutorials on it so far, including some youtube videos, check it out

Or..

Go to my youtube channel to check out my alice 2.2 tutorials I have there..

I was hoping it wouldn't be something like that. My PC is custom built, but not by me, by a company, so its still under warranty. If I open the case I void the warranty, so I would have to send it off to the company for repairs; the issue is they are based about 400 miles away, so it takes ages and a part always comes loose in transit. Oh well.

Have you blown it with compressed air? It sounds like it's facing a lot of resistance on startup.

I'm a web developer/ designer now.

I've not really got a device for doing that, so I vacuumed it. It is better, but not fixed, just quieter, so I'm presuming its needing a good, proper clean.

Should've built the thing yourself. Literally like putting legoes together once you have all your parts. Gets a little complicated if you want to chop up the case and stick in something like a giant Dyson fan though.

I understand software well, but hardware confuses me. I would probably be fine at building it, as you said, its like lego, but its finding the right parts that I'm not very good at. I'm also not very good at maintenance, sure I can slot pieces together and plug parts in, but when it goes wrong I'm screwed.

That's why I like it all under warranty, I just don't want to have to send it for repairs when the only issue is a noise that isn't affecting anything. I could open it up and void my warranty, I do have warranties for all the individual parts, but I just don't think I should consider sending it back or opening it up unless the fan actually shows better signs that it is under stress.

Anyway, I think I'm going to contact the company and seek their advice.

If I were you Arty, I would try cleaning it, and if it is still making the noise, then just leave it alone. I have a computer fan that has been doing that for years. I tried cleaning it, but it did not stop the noise. That was five years ago, and it is still fine.
