Default A 3D social programming environment (inspired by Alice) - 05-26-2010, 03:17 PM

Hi all,

Not so much Alice related, but the software is definitely inspired by Alice...

For the past 8 years, I have been working on a 3D engine (Env3D - to be used in introductory programming courses (I teach primarily first year computer science). The Env3D engine is heavily influenced by Alice - think of it as a programmatic version of Alice (without the drag and drop, similar to Alice version 3). The primary difference is that Env3D uses reflection so that students can program 3D objects right from lecture 1.

Lately, I wanted to bring online multi-user 3D world into my courses, so I started putting a networking layer on top of Env3D. After much playing around, I came up with Whalechat ( It is a 3D chat environment that has a python scripting engine built-in. Students can create their own environment, games, avatar, etc using python scripting, and can instantly share their work with others.

The system is now fairly stable and can be accessed by going to It uses java webstart so no installation is necessary. I have tested it on Windows and OS X. The software is under GPL (any version).

Under the tutorials section, you can find a few basic lessons on how to build your own environment. I will be adding more lessons as time progresses. If you have any questions in the mean time, feel free to drop me a line.

You know, I actually thought the OP was pretty interesting. I tried his program too. Very cute. Thanks for reminding me of where this thread was located, spammer.
