You have to type commands in a terminal. Open a terminal and find the directory where you placed the file 'Alice-2.0.0.tar.bz2'. Now 'cd' (change directory) to this location and type:

"tar -xvfz Alice-2.0.0.tar.bz2".

That should decompress the file. Now you should be able to use the program called 'run-alice' in the directory called 'Required'.

I am stuck too. I am running Mint. I do not know where the dircetory is? what it is called? and what to type. can you clarify please. I am new to linux and know zero re: command line. I also noticed another command on their download page that I do not think that you mentioned.

Please help - I would love to get this working...

@ thebigbug, linux1, and Ibarmen

Go to the directory where the file run-alice is located, for me it was:

cd Documents/Programming/Alice/Required/

cd is the command to change directories, you can go one directory at a time
or all at once (easy since the terminal autocompletes entries)

then type the following line followed by a carriage return:

./run-alice

(the above characters are dot slash, which is a common way to start executables
in linux)

You'll then see a bunch of lines of text scroll up on your terminal,
after which the Alice window will appear on your screen.
That's as far as I've gotten.

FYI, I'm running PCLinuxOS fully upgraded

@Linux1
the directory is wherever your browser saves downloads to or wherever
you uncompressed it to.

I also have problems with Alice on ubunt (8.10)
Alice starts and seems ok, but when in tutorial or loaded world I press "Play" -- I see empty grey frame -- and no fun :/

Default Alice on Ubuntu - 12-10-2008, 08:46 PM

I wish I had more specific help for you, but I run Alice on Ubuntu and have been doing so for a half year or so. On Ubuntu you can start Alice from the command line, but clicking on the run-alice file and then choosing "run in terminal" is faster.

I have found that setting desktop effects to NONE in Ubuntu helps when trying to run some Java programs. Also, make sure you have all the necessary Java files installed. You may want to try Sun's JDK instead of using Open JDK.

I really hope Linux compatibility is a focus for Alice 3.0...

Installing Sun JDK 6 is what did it for me.

Get it through Synaptic or do sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk or something like that.
