Hello all.

I'm very new to this world as I try and teach myself Objective C. I have a very very basic question so I apologise in advance. I am using the book Objective C for absolute beginners which uses Alice. But I am having to run Alice 3.0 on my new Mac. Therefore some differences appear between the book and my version of Alice. Anyway my question is how do i "Create a New Variable" in Alice 3.0? `From my textbook of the older version there from what i can see used to be a button under create new parameter. My version does not have this.

Alice 3 is not capable of a lot of things. It is still in Beta to. I suggest use Alice 2.2 because you won't be able to make a game in Alice 3. You can't even undo which will get very annoying.

Thanks for the reply. But could you advise how i could get 2.2 installed on OS Lion? I did attempt this aft first but struggled and read someplace that 2.2 is not supported in Lion due to Rossetta?

It can't be run on Lion.

It runs on Snow Leopard and below.
Alice 2.2 is written in PowerPC code.
Hopefully, they will update it soon to Intel code.

Thanks. I was hoping you would not say that, looks like its back to the drawing board to find a way to learn Objective C.

Can't you use Xcode 4? I have heard that it makes certain things easier now.

Well that was the original plan as i had bought a "for dummies" book on iPhone app development but it got a bit heavy as i have no previous programming or coding knowledge in any language. So i ended up with a Objective C for Absolute beginners book which was a lot better as it was going through the basics using Alice. I will see if any other books are out there which start at the very basics but use Xcode 4 etc.

Alice 2.2 now works on Lion! Just make sure you install Java first.
