Now this is gonna turn out a little cheap, but I've been trying to look at some explosion effects, and the best (and simplest) one I've found useful is just placing a high-poly sphere in ground zero and resizing it to some large size, like 10 or 15 or something like that.

Also, just a thought, import a texture of fire for the sphere for some kudos points.
