Default Unable to Open Alice on Vista - 11-01-2008, 10:10 AM

Alice refuses to launch on my computer. The computer
is running Windows Vista x64 Business Edition SP1. Color display is
set to 16-bit. Java Version 6 Update 7 (build 1.6.0_07-b06) installed, though it appears from the error message that Alice is not using this version of Java.

I get the same error regardless if I run Alice.exe or SlowAndSteadyAlice.exe. I have also executed IfAliceFailsTryThis.exe and the problem persists.

Any suggestions on how to get Alice working on Vista x64?

J Wolfgang Goerlich

It looks like you are trying to run Storytelling Alice instead of the standard version. I personally haven't tried that under Vista, nor do I recall anyone who has - but I know it was mainly a research project, so it may simply not run with Vista because of the way it was compiled.

Attempting to set the compatibility mode to windows XP service pack 2, or Windows 2000 does not help. Not tried other versions because the error message is the same. Slow and Steady (storytelling) alice gives the same error.

Directly invoking IfAliceFailsTryThis.exe in XP compatibility mode doesn't even show the splash screen, though something pops up too quick to see and vanishes.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it work under Vista 32bit edition.

These diagnostics are probably of little help at this stage, given this is unsupported, and Alice 3 will be with us in the new year, and the team is not big enough to allocate people to support Storytelling Alice.

Default Unable to open Alice on vista - 11-05-2008, 12:51 AM

I downloaded Alice, not storytelling, and extracted the files. When I attempt to open the program, an Alice picture appears, but an error message appears saying could not load library jvm.dll. Ive tried running Alice, slow and steady alice, and the google mirror of alice and have the same result. ive also run if alice fails try this and nothing happens. I don't know what to get Alice to run.

Alright, then, I will await Alice 3. Thank you (and everyone else) for the assistance.

Default Alice on Vista - 11-07-2008, 01:40 PM

I have had only minor (but annoying) problems running Alice in the compatibility mode under Vista. It is the home 32-bit edition, however. I have seen reports of problems with the 64-bit version and older problems - the basic reason I have avoided that so far, even though I would really like the added power - particularly memory address space.

Default fixed problem - 12-08-2008, 11:10 PM

ok so I had the same problem with the java error message and then copying the dll to the alice folder, then getting the other error message. The problem was that vista wont extract all of the files when it is unzipped (i dont know why) so I downloaded a different unzip program called 7 zip. you can get it free at 7-zip.org then select your zipped folder of alice and unzip it through that program and it worked for me perfectly. hope it works and good luck

Default It works! - 01-02-2009, 04:59 PM

Thank you, thank you, thank you. You can not see me, but I am blowing you kisses. You were absolutly correct about Vista not unzipping all the files. I took the files to an XP system and unzipped them. I then copied the directory back onto the Vista system and Alice now loads. Now all I have to do is learn to use it. Thanks again.

The "why" is that some of the program files, worlds and object files apparently contain either .rar compressed files or Java binary files. I usually run Alice with XP, so can't comment specifically on Vista, but even with XP I recommend extracting with 7-Zip. It's free and works well.
