Cheaters?
 

Hi:

I'm using Alice to teach introductory animation.
I'm getting assignments that look suspiciously similar and was wondering if there was some kind of file property I could use to definitively check for duplicates?
File creation date/time works well in Office files as a kind of file "fingerprint", is there something similarly unique for .a2w files?

Any help would be appreciated,

Hi,
I used a program to generate checksums. I cant remember what it was called on windows for sure but I think it was something like mssum.
If the files are exactly the same they will have the same checksum and the chance that two students would drag all the objects to the exact same place in two different movies, even if they try is remote.

That being said make sure the students know that they cannot work together with one person doing the authoring and then copy the results and hand them in.

Using a checksum utility I was able to confirm that the 2 files in question were identical.
Checksum is pretty definitive, right down to bit level.

Oooh someone got busted!

Admittedly, there is a bazilion of scenarios that can send homies on the chase for a payday loan lender willing to approve their request. Thank you for this, I am not sure why students would cheat if this is a skill-based thing. I will try to use checksums on some if needed, I just discovered this program now, hoping it will help caught dishonest students.

I may be mistaken, but the date created / modified time stamp is a function of the OS, not specifically the software, and you should be able to check that on Alice project files as well?

Alice 2 and Alice 3 automatically create back up files , and you might ask the students to see those backups so that you can check the project development?

I will also meet with a student and ask them to explain a piece of code, or I will break their project in some way and ask them to fix it in front of me, or ask them to add a feature?

I also tend to ask students create open ended project of their own design, but they must submit a proposal / description beforehand.
