Actually "game design" is - or at least is becoming - a specialty in itself. I know Dick Baldwin has mentioned that his school is offering a program in that this coming fall, and I've seen others in various course catalogs.

Since it involves both real time, interactive programming and fairly complex animation and graphics, it is (IMO) a bit hard to classify it in any other single category.
