How To Make Car Shift Gears

So, I am creating this car world, but I would like to be able to shift gears. How do I do that?

First you have to think of all the things that happens when a car changes gears,
The first step would probably to create a number variable within the world dictating which gear the car is on
I dont know much of a motorhead but you should probably insert a speedometer with a working needle to show the change in speed.
