Many school programs start with Drag-and-Drop products, migrate to options like Python, and then move to Java to satisfy requirements for AP certifications.

You will probably find that a significant number of SDK's available for the devices out there are meant to be added to, and used with, Java to develop cross-platform apps.

It really depends on what you want to do. If this is your first time programming, I recommend Python.
