Default How do I?...Make a vehivle move forward with tires - 10-06-2010, 01:07 PM

I'm trying to do exercise 2 in chapter 6. I have the tires rolling in a realistic manner by using the realistic ball roll method in the beginning of the chapter. I thought that after I did that I would be able to set the car's vehicle property to one of the tires. Can't do that.

I've been trying everything I can come up with to get that car to move with the tires and I'm out of options.

Check here: Trouble Shoot Orientation and Tire Roll

Lots of people have come to the forums for help, and more likely than not someone's already posted about it.
For future reference, try to do a little searching yourself before making a request.

I have been dead for quite some time now; not much hope for resurrection.

Thanks for replying.

I searched and found that thread before I posted. It really didn't help me too much.

When I tried that solution, the tires still get away from the car.

I'm really not much of a coder.

I'll just wait until next week when I can get help in class.

Why have the tires dictate how the car moves? You can use the ball rolling concept without having the tires themselves move forward, only the car.

Have the tires roll at speed x rev/sec, then have the car move forward 3.14*tire's height at the same time.

Never thought about that route.

Results are still the same. Tires end up in front of the car.

I'm using Alice 2.2 6/15/2010.

Maybe I should go back to 2.0

No, that won't help in this case.

Hold on, I'll look at your world.

Yeah, it can be done.

Here's the proof

Wow.
I still don't get it.

There's no way set the car's vehicle property to the wheels?

I'm amazed that I did all the work to get the tires to move and the hardest thing is getting the car to move with the tires.

I'm going to start over and try something else.

You can do that, but it's a bad idea. You see, the car can only have one vehicle, and there are four tires. If you make one of the tires the car's vehicle, you'd need to make the tire's vehicle the world. This would really just be pointless and make placement of the car manually outside of runtime more difficult, since you'd have to drag the car around by the tire.

I didn't start completely over.

I just tried something else with the car's move forward statement. The tires still end up almost a full car length ahead of the car itself when everything stops.

Is there anyway to get the value of the distance the tire will roll and tell the car to move the same distance?
