If you are having trouble at that level, you are way over your head trying to start on both Alice/Java and Linux at once.

My suggestion is that you either fine a good programmer locally to help (you're going to need it) OR that you just pick one or the other topic to start on.

If you do pick Alice, I'd suggest you run it under Windows XP - it seems the least buggy on that OS. Any of the texts are pretty good and you can get them used at fairly reasonable prices on Amazon.com.

Ok - thank you for nothing. I use macs for my office and business and website stuff other than this one linux machine. I never use or even own windows. never will.

Thank you for turning me off to Alice!

I really am dumb for a Ph.D.

you could have answered my question and got me on my way instead of slamming the door shut as such.

see YA!!!

Geez Dr. Jim!! Didn't you know the sole purpose of this forum is to teach others how to install Linux Operating Systems?

Can you help me with a Unix question?

That has to be the scariest acronym that I've seen in years!

And if "linux1" is still around - my first suggestion would be to run Alice on your Mac - the only major unique bug there is that component axis don't show up.

Under Linux, there are many, many problems that seem to vary with which flavor of Linux you are using. If you should want to proceed, I suggest you search the forum for posts that apply to your version.

No, sorry.

For a Ph.D., I'm really dumb when it comes to UNIX.

Maybe it's the advanced education. Back when I was in undergraduate school, I knew as much about UNIX as anyone in the world (which wasn't hard, since it hadn't been developed yet).

Default Linux runs fine - 09-19-2008, 04:02 PM

@DrJim:
If you don't know the answer, it is ok to not post an answer, or is there some contest
going on to reach the highest post count?

@lanceA
The question was not how to install the linux operating system, it was how to install
and run Alice on it. If you are going to be cynical, and snide, you'll need to upgrade
your comprehension skills first.

@linux1,
Installation on linux is trivial,
Save the download to the directory where you want to install it.
Browse to that location using your file browser
Right click on it and select "extract"
After that is completed (a few seconds)
Open a terminal, cd to the directory where the file run-alice is located, for me it was:

cd Documents/Programming/Alice/Required/

cd is the command to change directories, you can go one directory at a time
or all at once (easy since the terminal autocompletes entries)

then type the following line followed by a carriage return:

./run-alice

I'm glad it seems so to you - I'm really looking forward to future postings of worlds and/or videos that you have actually made with Alice on Linux. Hopefully you'll also explain your "trivial" solutions to some of the typical problems that have been reported by others in this forum.

If you'd like to also explain the interaction between Mint and the Java graphics techniques, that would also be nice.

For the record - I do believe my answer to the original posting is correct. The best way to learn these subjects is tackle the details of either Alice or Linux command line operation separately before you try the combination of the two - preferably with the real time help of a good programmer.

Default Alice for Linux (Hopeless?) - 09-19-2009, 05:11 PM

This thread seems to indicate that Alice should not be attempted on Linux. I am a software engineer who works exclusively in Linux and have been using Unix/Linux on and off for 20-odd years. I don't know anything about Alice, but I need to learn it for class and have a project due in a few weeks. If Windows is the only reliable OS for Alice, I guess I'll find an old Windows box to work on just for this project. I tried the simple install for Alice and get the following error:
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /home/user/Documents/ein6258/Alice/Required/jogl/lib/linux-i586/libjogl_drihack.so: /home/user/Documents/ein6258/Alice/Required/jogl/lib/linux-i586/libjogl_drihack.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 (Possible cause: architecture word width mismatch)
I don't know much about java, so debugging java and Alice for a short term assignment is probably not smart, or is it?
I am currently using at home:
Linux acer-laptop 2.6.28-15-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 18 19:25:34 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
