Default How to make my character move where I want it to - 11-25-2007, 10:19 PM

I was wondering if it was possible to make my character, and my camera, move towards an object when I click on it. For instance, If I have a tree in my world, would it be possible for when I click on that tree, my character walks over to it and my camera follows? Kinda like in an RPG?

Thanks! I love this program by the way. One of the eisier game dev programs ive used!

You can make the camera follow an object by setting the vehicle property of the camera to be the object that it is to follow.

That depends entirely on the object that you are using. For example, some of the objects, such as the Penguin, already know how to walk. In that case, you just call the method having the appropriate name.

On the other hand, if you want to use an object that doesn't already know how to walk, you need to pick one whose legs are properly articulated and then get ready for some serious programming effort. That is not an easy task, and given the nature of your questions, is a task that is probably beyond your current abilities. But then again, you may surprise me so I won't count you out yet.

Like Dick just said, some objects are perfect for the walk, while others can take hours to make walk (believe me, I tried!). If you want a person to walk for your RPG, go to the people builder and build your character. When you look at its methods, you'll see a walk method in there. You'll then just need to set the walk time.

Slightly off topic, but the walk question comes up every month or two.

One of the problems is that a good animated walk is basically very difficult to do, regardless of the tool. The problem is that everyone "knows" what a walk looks like and thus is quick to spot a "flaw." For an example, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7hXZiO3iww and the comments.

As noted, that walk follows one described by the great animator Richard Williams (Who Shot Rodger Rabbit?). To see how he analyzes real walks, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukGV5uuRcZI .
