Alice hangs when opening

I've downloaded the zip file (118k) and click on the alice.exe file. The splash screen comes up, but then it just hangs forever (I think). I tried running the IfAliceFailsTryThis.exe, but it just brings up a dos window for a couple of seconds which then disappears. Running the original exe file again after doing that doesn't change anything.
