Help Save The Alice Community! -- Join In The Fight Against Spam!

Hello fellow members of the Alice Community!

For those of you who have checked on the Alice Community Forums over the past few days, and taken a look at the New Posts page, you will have, undoubtedly, noticed all of the spamming that has taken place over the past few days. If you are like me, and are as attached to this community as I am, this spamming will make you angry, and make you want to take action, despite your lack of forum moderator power. Because we have only one moderator, and none of the administrators ever use the forum, that leaves one person to battle millions of spam bots and spam threads all on his own. As this struggling moderator tries to help save the world, the spam keeps coming, and we are left, watching painfully, as he takes an awful beating! We all want to help, but cannot because we are not moderators.

But can we help? Yes! Are we moderators? No! So how can we help? We can make a list of the spam posts that can easily be accessed by the forum moderator! Most of the spamming seems to be happening only in one forum, making the clean-up easier, but things are certain to get harder as the spam spreads like an infection to other forums! What I would like all of you to do is set out on a journey to find spam posts, and when you find them, post links to them in this thread! I will then compile the links into a nice, easy-to-read, list that will periodically be updated as new spam rolls in!

Nice idea, but I'm not sure it will help for several reasons:

- You can already report posts (using the button in the top left-hand corner)
- The spam threads aren't too hard to find
- Compiling a list of spamming members is better, as X just cleans and bans them rather than deleting individual posts (this is what X would prefer)
- We really need extra security measures:
ie * Better registration captcha
* Registration wait period
* Proper email confirmation
* A thread where you have to introduce yourself before you are allowed to post
* A post limit for junior members within a time period
* Detection of ridiculous thread titles
* Lower level mods that can flag/hide posts/threads and/or give users warnings

Hello,
I am a new administrator of the forum, and I am still getting my bearings. I am very aware of the spam and the frustrations you are all feeling about the spam.

I appreciate the list of user accounts that have been spamming, and if you continue to post the names of new spammers, we will try and purge them from the forum as soon as possible.

It may take some time to get ahead of this problem, and we will look at some of your suggested solutions for cutting this down. But thank you for your patience and your willingness to help.

I have been trying to visit the forum daily, to have more of a presence, and to review new posts.

You've come at a bad time, normally the forums are a friendly educational place, but right now they are being exploited; so all the best in getting this sorted.

Right now it looks like you/x2495iiii have done a good job at clearing the spam out, but my only worry is that you will continuously have to do this.

I will definitely post the names of spammers here. Any help I can give - I am happy to give. Thanks.

Wow, I'm back on after a few hours and it looks like all the spam cleared out.

Hello, Mr. Slater. Glad to see a new face on the forums.

I've visited the site three times today, and each time there was more spam. Clearing it away is easy and takes minutes, but as the saying goes, and ounce of prevention is better than a pound of protection. Don't worry about purging, that much I can do, and a list of names, though thoughtful, still isn't as fast as me going through the lists of new posts each time I visit. It would be better if the admins came up with some way to stop the spammers from getting their posts up in the first place, and if the users would simply continue doing their best to keep the boards, as arty put it, friendly and educational.
