alice 2.2 dies on startup

My daughter started using Alice yesterday and created some worlds, but today the application dies on startup with a java error on SHLWAPI.dll+0x206ee. I tried a Java update to version (J2SE Runtime 5.0 Update 17 and Java 6 Update 21), but the same results

I tried running IfAliceFailsTryThis.exe, but it also errors, and the cmd window disappears to quickly to see what it says. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Hit Print Screen when the cmd window comes up. Then open MS Paint (or any other picture editing program) and hit Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot with the cmd window. you'll be able to read it and then you can get better help once you know what the cmd window reads.

I reinstalled Java from the Oracle Java site. This fixed the problem for one execution.

As as linux user, I met the same IndexOutOfBoundsException error on Alice 2.0,
with exactly the same stack error on different java 1.5/1.6 versions and different Linux-es (Mandriva, Ubuntu).

Correction was very simple:
Total count of files in user's home hirectory must be less then 100, so you have to delete/move some files there. For this critical total folder names in home directory are counted too (but happily not with files in them)!
When files total is greater, Alice can work some time until it "detects" the limit 100, e.g. after some updates.
Because I don't know, what your home directory name in the Windows 7 is, I suggest you to create new user. You can hapilly start Alice by new user logged in (his/her "home" will be surely not large). As you will see Alice running OK, you can reduce old user homedir afterwards.
