Creating Objects

I came across an animation, where there was a two-dimesnsional object, and i was wondering if there was any common program i could use to do this

I've heard a lot of people on here talking about Google SketchUp for creating 2D Alice objects, but haven't used it yet myself. I use AutoDesk 3DS Max which can create either 2D or 3D objects and can be exported as a .ase file to be imported into Alice. Keep in mind though that 3DS Max isn't really intended to make 2D objects or scenes, but it is possible.
