So variables huh..?

I actually had a great deal of difficulty in this specific assignment, mainly because I had trouble understanding the concept of variables and creating my own methods. I also don't feel as though the textbook was all that helpful as far as how do them. I had to look up on youtube how to create and manage variables inside of parameters and stuff. It took awhile for the idea to sit in. After I started playing around with it in Alice the idea became a little but not by a whole lot. I think I still need some help in general with this subject.
